My brother is heading off accross the Nullarbor in January to go and live in WA. He wants to get into a bit of fishing action on the way and neither of us have any idea about what he might find along the way. Has anyone got any generic locations, breeds, baits, rigs, times that he could expect to use or encounter. I drove it in 1997 and there was only one place I could remember where there was no cliff and you could see the sand dunes from the highway.
My old stomping ground Roobone. If he doesn't want to head too far off the highway and has not got a 4wd, turn left at a little place called penong, it's the next town along the highway heading west from Ceduna. From Penong just follow the road down to Cactus beach, a well known surfing spot. There is beach fishing for salmon, big jew (even in daylight), whiting, or rock fishing for same and a small jetty in a protected cove where snapper are a possibility. (swimming from that jetty not recomended, a young lad was taken by a white pointer swimming to his parents yacht anchored only 50m away).
Or if he has more time and willing to deviate of the highway further then he can just ask locals, too many options to go into here. Start at Port Lincoln and work up the coast towards WA. Bear in mind the heat out that way in January is mind blowing.
Most of the big Mulloway on S.A.s West coast are caught during the day.A slab of fresh Salmon being the prefered bait.A long cast is not required but quality tackle is a must because there are usually lots of big Bronzies hooked between Mullies.
