    diesel... blue smoke

Just wanted to get your ideas b4 i head to the mechanics, I have a 96 nissan navara d21 2.7 diesel with 196000 kms. Over the last few days i have notice blue smoke out the back occasionally on start up but mostly when i am high revs about to change gears, it also surges when i really draw out changing gears and the blue smoke gets worse, it happens in all gears but if i change into the higher gear real early i doesnt do it at all, gonna be hard when i am towing me tinnie though. What am i looking at and more importantly rough costs??? Your help will be really apprieciated, cheers smacka

Hmmmm on start up that's usually valve stem seals gone hard, fairly cheap to replace.
High rev's thats the rings being stuffed. that ain't cheap.

Do a compression test first and see what's happening.

Is that motor Turbo charged ???? could be the seals in that then.

Hmmm so how do you check the comps on a diesel????

thanks roughasguts, the motor is not turbo charged, i had the gear box reco about 4 months ago so this fourby is costing me a packet!!

Out on a limb here a bit but it might need hooking up to a tonne and a half then a good hard tow for a full tank or so.

Could also be Glazed bores? (called polished bores to be correct) caused by poor choice in oil or running the oil too long.

Some diesels need to work I am told dunno about your model though.

    Hi Smacka,

Further to FNQ's comments; I have a diesel GU 4.2TD that Motsons did a power up job on the turbo. Tony Motson reckoned that the fact I tow a heavy boat reasonable distances was a good thing for the motor. Something to do with carbon build up I think? Might be good for the motor, but not so good for the pocket with the price of diesel these days!

I'm certainly no motor mechanic, so took his word for it.

    Regards,
    Dave.

forgot to add, dont know whether it makes a difference but i noticed that i got an extra 80kms out of my last tank of diesel (drove the same routes as prievious weeks, highway driving into city MELB so plenty of stop starts) really only started to notice the smoke after that

    Re: diesel... blue smoke

It could be as simple as a batch of fuel or as costly as a rebuild. Get a compression test done, takes about 30 mins and you will know how your motor is going.

Have you recently had a lot of damp or wet days after a long dusty period??
It could be your air cleaner has become dusty and with the moisture it turns to mud basically. Dirty aircleaners often do show with blue smoke as well.

Have your injectors been serviced in the last 80000 km? It could be they need retipping.

There are so many variables to work through.

I'm heading the same direction as tunaticer.
not doubting your ability to see colour but sometimes light grey "normal" diesel smoke can look blue in the rear vision mirror.
So if I'm on the right track it might just need some chemtec injector cleaner put through it for the next couple of tanks. (IMO this stuff works)
IMO its worth trying thing you can do yourself at a low cost than to get it looked at for $80-90 an hour.
    Are you using any oil???

    hope this helps

    Re: diesel... blue smoke

True Neil, however I am taking this thread as having abnormal smoke emissions, therefore I would opt for a simple compression test to know if all cylinders are operating at reasonable pressures for a starter.

Additives are generally good to run HOWEVER they need to be part of a regular regime that incorporates thier addition on basically a monthly thing. If you have a diesel that has run for several years without an additive there are possible less than desirable results that can be had.
Additives firstly kill off algae blooms that occur in diesel fuel, if your vehicle has a substantial bloom aqnd is running ok the additive will sometimes create a blockage of algae in the filters / injector pump / injector lines / injectors. Isolating a blockage can be a costly affair sometimes.
Secondly without regular applications of additives the carbonized scale that can form on the injectors and piston top can be quite robust and if the additive dislodges these scales they can cause quite serious damage to bores and pistons and valves.

Regular use of additives are very beneficial, irregular use can be fraught with peril.

    Tuna,
so true i dont doubt that what you have said could happen.
But i have never heard of an event like that before (but i can see how it could happen).
If the vehicle has black death (algae) its inevitable that it will start reeking havoc sooner or later anyway imo

Just a thought have you had a service lately? or has the wife checked the oil, wouldn't be the first time a person got a surprise overfull engine.

    Re: diesel... blue smoke

hi smacka,is yor navara a common rail diesel,or mechanical pump? if common rail i would run some injector cleaner, pull the ecu fuse out for the night, this will reset ecu ,ie clear any fault codes..if mechanical i would get the pump calibrated & injector cleaner..

    cheers tez

    Re: diesel... blue smoke

thanks for all your advice guys, i have been using oil, the mechanics are goin to go over it tom. They are goin to do a compression test and also remove the glow plugs and have a gander, if nothing seen from there they will just do a process of elimination. Talked with them about if the motor is stuffed trying to either reco my old 1- 2.7l diesel with maybe a turbo added or putting a 3.2l into it. what are your thoughts on this if i go the bigger motor what dangers or challenges are there and is it worth it? I was just thinking cause i spent money on the gear box, brakes, new tyres and shockers recently i may as well spent a little more and try to get a bigger motor and just hang on to the old girl 4 a few (lot) more years, body is still in great nick.
