Warranty claims are agaisnt manufacturors faults and are ultimately approved by the manufacturor, if a bloke at a tackle store thinks its high sticked or crushed in a car door it means the rep will aswell and is probably trying to save you the hassle of hanging around without a rod and then when the rep comes round and says 'high stick tell him he's dreaming'.
Its for this very reason i don't place much faith in warranties. What good is Five year warranty if you can't prove it was a manf. fault after 4.5 years due to all the other knocks and scratches a rod will inevitably get. I reckon if its gonna fail due to maufacturers fault...that will happen straight away and I would expect the benefit of the doubt from the Manufacturer....otherwise if you've had it a while and it's seen a few fish......any kinks should have been found by now and you're on your own.
I'm not saying its Right....just that after a few weeks, its got to be hard to prove one way or another....

i agree roo with the warranty stuff

what i hate is when people bring their broken rod back, and expect you to give them a new one on the spot willy nilly, take their word for it that it snapped on a bream....and when u say na have to send it back....they get the shits at you and start bad mouthing your workplace....

    get real

people complain about smart ass comments by the salesman etc, and plead their innocence in the matter, yeah fair enough it may be a fault....but theres a hell of alot of rods that come back that are broken because people arent using them correctly, also sometimes these shops get 10 rods back a week....if they replaced every one of them no questions asked then they wouldnt be in business.

I have 11 Trion rods (several different models) and have flogged them to death for around 4 years, in this time, I have broken 5 rods, 4 in one go in the car door :-( and the other one I stood on :-(, its hard to imagine a bad batch in these rods, mine have performed extremely well and for the price, they are very hard to beat :-). In saying that, in the same time frame, I have broken two Loomis rods, one live fibre, one Strudwick and a Pflueger Medalist, so i figure I am just to rough on my gear :-)

Funny you should mention this, I snapped my Trion in half at the two piece join while trying to pull the plug up from the bottom.
That wasnt the major problem. It was the two and a half weeks it spent in the shop (G.C. t.v. reporter owned) supposedly getting fixed only to be told we cant repair it and we were waiting for parts. IT'S NOT A FUGGIN CAR! What parts!!
I took it to Budds at Cleaveland and it was repaired for $30. under three days and a damn nice job too.
It wasnt a warrenty claim as the rod was way past that, but it did strike me, Why did the rod break at the join?
As for the reps issue in past posts, they have a duty of care to the shops they are selling to, as well as looking after budgets, which usually dont have much allocated for freebies, so they walk a fine line on pissing Joe Blow consumer off or pissing their boss off.

I think you are very rough on your gear mate. In about 4years of using graphite rods i have snapped a grand total of 0 while fishing and a grand total of 0 from fans car doors ceiling etc. And from over 3 year of working in a tackle store i've only had 2 brake on me when loading them up on a customer. But lots of graphite rods get pulled out of there bag broken usually from transit and rough handling in the dock.

Team - did I stir up a hornet's nest or what???

To the credit of my local tackle store they did agree that this break should not have happenned. They have requested the rep bring a replacement rod with his next visit.

I guess it does help to have a good relationship with your local store. This may have been a case of them knowing I would not try to scam them, this is the first thing I have returned to them in about 10 years of shopping there.

Now I look forward to enjoying some fishing time with the replacement rod, as the first one didn't get to flick a barra lure

    Cheers.

Exactly, specially with reels now that okuma has put a 25 year warrenty on even there cheapest reels and shimano with its 10 year warrenty on its 20 and 30 dollar reels, at that price they are practically a disposable item, they are not designed to last 10 months let alone 10 years. but the catch is manufacturors faults so build up of corrosion and wearing of bearings and gears is all covered under maintinance and wear and tear. As long as the something doesn't physically brake they won't normally touch it.

Something i think everyone should be aware of aswell with summer almost upon us is hot cars kill more than dogs, they can weaken the epoxy base in both graphite and fibreglass (especially glass) rods. This coupled with any sought of bend or load on the rod can kink and even brake rods. And yes you can tell the difference between this sought of brake and a failure through use, where the epoxy cools it contracts and fuses the fibres back together. I had a heap of rods come back like this last christmas and the ones where customers insisted on a warranty assessment were all disappointed to here the results from the reps. To add insult to injury the reps don't show up to stores very often during christmas cause they're flat out so it can often take ages for an assessment if it isn't posted down.
