Positioning of Transducer (Fibreglass)

Hi Guys

My family bought me a Garmin 160 Fish Finder for my recent birthday.

I have NEVER fitted one before and just need some advice on the best place to position the transducer. I have a 16ft fibreglass cuddy-cabin with a Yammy outboard.

The brochure suggests fitting it as close to the bottom centre of the transom., but not in the path of prop turbulence.

Do I fit the bottom of the transducer bracket just above the bottom of transom, or level with the bottom.

Jim, read and reread the installation instructions to the letter.

Install the transducer bracker as close to the bottom of the boat that will allow the bottom of transducer itself to skim and run on the surface or just under of the water that will flow past.

Setup the bracket so you have plenty of adjustment up and down of the transducer. Use sikaflex 291 on anything you screw into your hull, and use it sparingly.

Mount on the starboard side of the boat, away from any strakes in the hull , skin fittings or anything else that will cause turbulence in the water.

Mounting must be at least 300mm away from the outboard gear case if iIremember correctly.

Why the starboard side? I have my ladder (skiers etc) on the starboard side and intended to install it on the port side between the 85HP motor and the small backup so it would not be un intentionally stood on.

I believe the reason it has to be on the starboard side is because as the prop turns clockwise, it will push the water down away from the transducer causing less distubance to ther water near the transducer giving you a solid hld on the bottom whilst driving...

hhmmm the prop spins in a full circle, it will "push" water evenly in all directions, a good way to start off with the Transducer height is to have someone hold a nice straight piece of timber under the hull and slide the Tranducer down untill it rests on the timber, then it is completely level with the bottom, from there the slotted holes in the bracket can be used to adjust it up or down a tad for best performance.

Every transducer manual i've seen says mount on starboard side for pptimum performance, All to do with the prop and the way it spins.

A mate of mine has a seafarer victory and has his mounted portside. He gets perfect performance. Kills mine.

I have moved mine up and down that many times, i was thinking of moving it to the portside. But now having second thoughts.
