    Dunoon wild bass

went river bassin in a small creek near dunoon nth nsw with a couple of mates last weekend we were at the creek by 5am dropped one car of at a macadaimia farm close to the river then drove back 10ks to start the trek up the river armed with a rod each a couple of surface breakers and a few slidergrubs away we went. after the trek up and down the hill to the water we were strait into it 2 casts for 2 bass on surface one about 45cm but very skinny the other about 35 poor condition aswell. the action was the same for the whole trek every decent hole had a bass or 2 goin was very tough a few slips and slides along the way the teraim is very over grown and rocky not for the faint hearted or the hung over like i was we got about 13 bass 5 being over 50cm for or eforts most taken on sliders with beetle spins 1/8 nitro jigheads a few on suface and one on a small stumpy till my mate lost it. the bass were all very hungry and out of condition. hopefully they get some rain to wash some food down for them or wash them out of the small pools they are in

Very nice mate. Do you find the wild Bass go harder than the impundment Bass? Nice work, hope to hear a few more reports.

    Re: Dunoon wild bass

they definately hit harder than inpondment and are harder to land because of the snags everywere but you dont get the runs like dam fish a lot of the time your casting over rocks and trees somtimes your 4-5m from the water casting at them you have to be pretty quiet so you dont spook them. Its a lot more exiting than flicking the banks in a dam alot harder goin though

    Great fishing NOjacks

The fight with wold bass seems to be at a higher internsity for a shorter period of time. However, the best fights i've had with bass have been in impoundments. They are generally in better condition and when the water is really hot (high 20's to 30 degrees) and they are near standing timber they go off their nuts. i still prefer catching wild fish though.

    Re: Dunoon wild bass

I'd suggest that the reason that these bass are so big and out of condition is because they are actually derrived from an (upstream) impoundment population and have come over the wall and are yet to get down the creek to the coast and are living at greater density & size class than they would in a naturally recuited population that far up the creek (if you are fishing the creek I think you are).

PS did you see any eastern cod?

    Re: Dunoon wild bass

    hey there jim
your on the money mate they certinly did come over the wall a mate of mine grew up down that way he and a few mates used to get cod fingerlings and spread them into the biger water holes they did this for quite a few years theve only ever recaught 2 and heard of one other which some w#*!#r took home and ate. there are a few deep pools up there with no bass i can only think of one reason why its just such hard country you could never fish it safely at night when the cod are active on day mabey. weve caught nice bass below the falls aswell but there a bit futher between casts

    cheers NOjacks
