Thread: Eating NPD fish

    Re: Eating NPD fish

The problem with tilapia is the are mouth breeders i.e. they holdvery small fry (tiny baby fish) in thier mouths to protect them. If you release a tilapia you are also releasing the possible thousands of tiny fry in its mouth and gills even after you have taken the hook out.

As for eating the bass they are excellent. I fillet and skin my bass and cut into chunks about 30-40mm square and egg and cornflake crumb and deepfry.......geez my mouth is awash just thinking of it. add some salt to the corn flake crumbs and you wont be able to telkl the difference between salt and freshwater fish.

Large bass aparently are not good in stocked impoundments as they eat fingerlings by the dozen. I generally take one large bass each time i fish the dam.

yeah, I tried a bass from the NPD once- my housemate's a chef and he prepared it for me. (Filleted, dusted in floury spices and pan-fried). Not bad at all! I'd like to see some of the people fishing the NPD more regularly inspected by the fisheries people. Seems like anything they catch goes straight into the eskie no matter what size.
    Bar stewards!!!
    tight lines all...

A lot of people have noticed this sort of thing going on, especially around Mcgavins. Perhaps more attention should be directed at these people instead of the blokes who wander into the restricted zones to catch and usually release a big bass.
I know which one I'd crack down on first. I walked passed a group of people out there once and laying on the bank was an eeltail cattie about as long as your hand. I flicked it back into the water with my boot, and was called quite a few nasty things in Vietnamese.

It's not the eggs Rob it's the fact that they sometimes carry their young around in their mouths, I believe the term is mouth brooders.
