    new to townsville

I've just moved to Townsville so I'm new to the town but have just taken up this fishing caper. If anyone can give me any tips on where to fish locally to the town would be appreciated, no boat at this stage. Any local knowledge on bait types etc. would also be appreciated.
Currently living about 1km from aplin weir I've heard there could be some fish on the fresh & salt water sides, any tips on the best times?? What's the chances on crabs in the weir area.

Hows it going Juststarted, Welcome to Townsville . The wier you mentioned has Barra and Reddies and numerous other species ready for you to tackle. Predominately lures are used although live bait cant be beaten. Another location which will be handy to you is the rock walls down at the breakwater near the Casino at the strand. Easily accessable and fish well at night or early morning. If you are into beach fishing, Palleranda and some of the local beaches such as Bushland beach, Balgal and Saunders beach are all available within short distance. Hope this has given you somewhere to start. There are many more places handy as you will find out when you move around. Not too sure if you mentioned where you came from (south?)so watch out for the Swamp Gecko's (CROCS) if fishing off river banks. They are definately there. Cheers Shane

    Welcom to Townsville and Ausfish.

Alpins weir produces some very good barra and jack on both live baits and lures, though I have never fished there myself (have access to a boat and live on the other side of town) others pull many good fish out of there.

As for me, land based is more around the rockwalls, down behind the casino and along the rockpool (northern end of strand) and these possies can produce some very good fish, and plenty of variety too, including barra, salmon, grunter, trevally, barracuda. tarpon, jacks and fingermark on the odd occasion. Baits I normally use are live herring and mullet caught at the lakes, (next to Joyce mayne new shop) and any of those baits that die are used for flesh baits. As well as your typical prawn and squid.

I have a variety of rigs ranging from 6lb flickstick to a bigger 30lb barra basher. Mpst of the tackle stores around are good on theri advice and very freindly if you want to just have a chat to one of them one day.

Cheers, and good luck on your fishing,

    Scott
