    TLD15 Problem- Any ideas?

Have just serviced my TLD15 and have a problem I can't work out. When I wind the handle it is initially fine then starts to bind up an become hard to wind. If I keep winding it eventually loosens up but then the same thing happens again.
ANy ideas what I have done wrong or does a part need replacing?

    Kev.
I never had a TLD 15 apart but it sounds like something is bent or not in its right position. Perhaps something jammed in a couple of teeth of a gear. Can you take the cover off and still assemble the rest and watch the mechanism as you wind.

    Good luck

I have had the same problem but have never worked it out. I just pull it back to pieces and reassemble and seems to fix it. I think it may have something to do with the brass washer on the handle or the tin cover that covers the handle shaft.

more than likley the first bush or bearing in the handle,
undo the face plate from the body of the reel then turn the handle to see how free it is, if there is any resistance at all it will get worse under load.

I have a TLD20 that would do the same thing. I had replaced bearings but the problem would always return.
The issue was eventually linked to the small brass washer as part of the crank (handle) mechanism having a very small crease in it.
All is fine after replacing the washer.

the first thing to fail on any of these reels is the right main side plate bearing. in freespool, you turn the handle and it feels rough. in gear, cranking feels rougher and the handle becomes increasingly more difficult to turn as the drag settings increase.

your problem sounds different. my guess is that the drive shaft is corroded. i've seen some that are so bad that the drive shafts had to be pounded out of the side plates. let's pop yours out , clean up and lube both the drive shaft and sleeve, get it re-installed and check it out again. can you let us know how it goes? oh, and check the right main side plate bearing while you at it. thanks! alan

Dunno if this is relevant, but it maybe. Similar problem on my Penn LD was caused by the waffly shaped washers on the side of the shaft opposite where the lever is, getting a bit crushed. The lever drag seems to operate by moving the reel sideways which also moves the main gear away from the centre of the gear on the handle. In my case it was barely touching the edge and going crunch. There is only a couple of thou to play with.
I replaced the waffly shaped washers and things improved. (Putting them back in the wrong way round would produce the same result.)
I have given up my old practice of using the drag to hold the reel locked which squashed the washers. Now leave it with drag off.
