I was just reading the latest issue of a national hunting/shooting mag and in it there is a pic of a bloke who uses a .22 cal rifle to "fish" for carp at weirs and such........pic shows that he has a nice catch too............LOL

When I was at high school in Rockhampton in the early sixties a favoutite weekend activity was to head up-river a few kilometres (the barrage wasn't built then) and camp overnight on a big sandspit on a bend in the river. To feed ourselves we would shoot the pop-eye mullet with 22 rifles and then barbecue them on a fire. The only problem was finding the mullet after you'd shot them because most of them would sink. Aaaahhh! - the good old days
If you tried it now you'd probably get arrested - or taken by a croc

Think shooting them is strange? I've got a story for you.

My brother was working with this guy from Mexico and he mentioned to him that he likes fishing. The guy says he also likes to fish and they get to talking and the issue of carp fishing comes up. My brother asks him where he goes and what he uses for bait. He says he fishes at a local lake but he doesn't use bait.

"Huh?! No bait?"

No, he doesn't use any bait................he hides in the cat-tails (a reedy, aquatic shore plant over here) and ambushes them WITH A MACHETE!


Could you imagine the look on the face of the DNR officer checking for fishing licenses when the machete-wielding pescador comes popping out of the bushes? How he hasn't been arrested or shot yet, I'll never know!

Ay caramba! Viva Mexico!

I'll stick with corn kernals.

It is quite common I think for property owners with landlocked pools in drying creeks and rivers to occasionally sit back and take out cruising carp with their trusty old firearms. I know ive taken a few dozen out of the equation over the yrs with either the swift or the 7x61 S&H. mid afternoon just as some shaddows start touching the waters seems to be the time to pay attention.

Correct me if Im wrong.I thought discharging a firearm at the water's surface was dangerous!!!. I seem to remember when i was taught firearm safety( long time ago now) that you dont do it

It's only dangerous if you are on the other side of the lake rando. You're perfectly safe behind the rifle. Hehe.

Rando, True shooting at water can be dangerous. This is especially so if you are shooting at a reflective angle to the water where a ricochet can occur and that can be up to roughly 45 degrees of angle depending on the wave action on the water and the type and speed and weight of the projectile.

My efforts have all been from the top of a 20-30 foot bank shooting fairly squarely at the water with no chance of ricochet. I have seen some shots placed with a 22 at about the 45 degree mark and heard the bullet singing off into the distance with ricochet tho.
.22cal rimfire would be probably the most prone bullet ever invented for ricochet due to its ballistic design and its lower relative speed.
