Re: Burrum River
Drop into the local bait shop - they have a mud-map of the river & can suggest some spots.

Mate she's a great system to fish. plenty of action upstream for jacks, cod, and the odd barra. Down near the mouth it's a really great selection - should even be some decent macks chopping around, so be sure to troll if the conditions are favourable. hopefully the weed will stay away for you, as the downstream section can become unfishable if it starts to take hold. have a good one and let us know how you go.

Re: Burrum River
I had a week there last year, which was the first time I had been there so my questions were like yours. Here are a couple of things that I found very important.
Boat ramps - there are two main ones but both have the same problem. The tidal rise and fall is large compared to Brisbane and the tide really rips past the ramps. I have a 4.5m Quintrex, not a big boat, and I was by myself. I found it impossible to retrieve the boat by myself unless it was near the turn and the water was slowing down. Thankfully there was often a land-based angler or two who helped me at times. (The boat ramp at Walker's Point across the river is a much easier ramp to use by the way - if you're camped over there or staying at Woodgate)
Navigation - the bait shop sells a laminated map of the river with places to fish for various species marked, for $2. It's worth grabbing one before you start. It also has GPS marks for various reefs in the offshore section of Hervey Bay. The nearest one is the artificial reef in front of Woodgate. The river is very shallow at low tide so it's worth picking out the channels on the first low tide you're out and noting some marks to aim for when crossing from the Burrum side to the Woodgate side. It's quite a long way down the channel into the open bay before you clear all the banks.
Bait - when I was there there were plenty of herring schools about and I was able to get a reasonable supply of fresh live bait each time I went out. Yabbies are plentiful but they are VERY small and not worth using in my opinion
Crabs - I was hoping to get a few muddies while I was there, but there were more pots up all the little creeks than you see at Bribie on a Sunday. I couldn't believe it. I only got a couple of keeper crabs in a week! Might have just been unlucky I guess.
Fish - there were plenty of fish in the estuary and out in the bay and I had a great week, so enjoy.
Just a tip - don't camp under any of the trees in the caravan park. There are 20 million lorikeets roost in them overnight (take some ear plugs) and another 20 million flying foxes that feed in them as well. You can lie in bed and be lulled to sleep by the gentle rain of flying fox cr*p and lorikeet pee every night
