We once caught a 14ft pike eel during a flood down near the mouth. Grant's underestimates the maximum length they get to by a few feet.

Could have been a big specimen of these..

    gidday

buddy what I think you have got is a rather large stingray
a good size one doesn't muck around
If it heads downstream it keeps on going and a tiny 20kg line means zip to it
A smaller model would usually hug the bottom like a suction cup but the bigger ones are like a freight train
Saw a good size one on tingalpa creek last week about 6 foot across and moving beautiful sight and hard to stop

just a stab in the dark, possibly big cod. saw some from old days 130lb easy and they have had no reason to move. especially with fishers using 20lb line.food for thought hey mate! cheers d-canman

Braid was snapped some metres under water. There was no structure around the hole we were fishing. Not bitten off or a knot failure at leader.

Don't think it was a pike eel as it went too hard. Don't think it was a ray as I've not heard of rays taking a live mullet. Big cod unlikely though I would be tickled pink if it was.

I still think shark or jew but I guess I'll never know. 'Twas exciting though!!

    Richard,
that is one MONSTER pike eel! you must've been using heavy wire or cable! did you get a pic? that is a monster - must've SH&t yourselves, as i can only imagine how irascible she woulda been, lol. what was the bait?

Pete i think you're right, but i have actually scored a couple iof rays up the noosa a few tyears back on live poddy. i was shocked also, as i didnt think theyd take them. but yeah, dunno if it wouldve been a ray.

Big Yellow tail King? Had a similar thing happen in Sydney harbour early this year. Drag was too tight and BANG!

wat sort of braid were you using?? sounds like bad braid to snap like that even if it was a big fish.
wiplash sometimes brakes without sometimes for no reason.
could have been anything and its hard to play the guessing game.
big trev, giant herring jack... could have been anything. its annoying when you just dont get to see wat they are and i always just wanna at least see wat it was!

Re: What hits big in the Logan?

Hey guys, Rays will often take live mullet. Many times while fishing for jew with poddys around iluka i have hooked massive rays. As stated they do run extremly hard and dont act like there younger brothers and sisters(no suction). For the record i think it may have been a hammerhead shark aswell, sounds like something a large specimen would do. Cheers
