You win some, you lose some...
Well, last night was a lose some night.
Hooked up to a 30kg plus jew on the tld 25 on a 5120 and it proceeded to rip off about 150m of 55lb schneider then slug it out along the wall taking short 20-30m runs every so often without me gaining much line back at all.
Personally called it for a shark but the jewfisherman next to us said he had his money on a XOS jew as he had hooked 2 and landed 1 in the last 3 days.
The fish took a live mullet about 35cm long after only 10minutes max in the water. Was a real surprise as i was still in the process of putting some more bait in the tank.
Chased the bastard down the wall which is very characteristic of the bigger jew around here. Eventually dived into or around a little rocky outcrop which we couldnt get to and busted us off.
Funny the feeling you get when you know that you were just outgunned. You just sit there and think...
There was nothing that i coulda done to turn his head and i feel he still had some to go....
45m after the fight began and i wandered back to the gear and tossed out a live whiting. half hour later and SMACK! short run and spat it.
Preparing the elephant guns for tomorow night, taking the 90lb setup to try and muscle them out.

I wouldn't know if the bloke standing next to you was Tye Porter because I have not had the pleasure of meeting him, but from what he writes in the October edition of Bush 'N Beach fishing, where you are fishing is a good place to be at the moment Keep at it Matt, don't forget the camera!!

Hey Matt.... sorry to say this, but I have caught plenty of jew to 20kg (including fish off the rocks) but a lot mor shovelnose (up to 50+kg) and I would have to say that U were more likely hooke up to a big shovellie that a big jew..... I have caught up to 4 BIG jew in a night and not had the trouble u had, BUT every big shovelly has caused me heartache.....

I'm asking out of interest and ignorance, and am not trying to cause offence.
In going to 90lb mono mainline, you are going for abrasion resistance?
I've broken line over a 7' rod at 17lb on the scales, and it was a fair old effort. I couldn't pull 30lb over that length rod I reckon, it was a Silstar Crystal Powertip 701swh, not a stroker (which would obviously be a lot shorter)

Good luck on your next try. From your description of the way it fought I'm with you that it was more likely to have been a shark, but you don't know until you see the colour. There's not much better sight than a big bronze jew with that glowing red eye in the torchlight coming to the surface at night
