Thread: Battery Issue?

    Battery Issue?

    Folks, just a quick one.

I have dual batteries wired to an isolator switch.

With the switch in the OFF position, I have no power to my electrics, which of course is expected.

However, with the switch in the OFF position, if I connect a multimeter to the Positive terminal on the battery (either battery), and then to a ground on the boat, the meter shows 12.6 volts. This of course is the same if I turn the switch to the 1 or 2 position.

Do I have an earth leakage problem??? and does it really matter??

And another quickie..... what should the multimeter read when I am revving the engine? I'm not sure if it is charging properly.

Hope someone can give me a pointer here.

    cheers
    Mike

Mate, from what i know. The motor is grounded to the hull , via the stainless steel bolts. So it should show 12.6. If you want to test if there is stray currently. Put the black on the negative terminal and red on the hull. If there is stray current you will see it. I have 0.03 volts when i do this, Try it on yourself, you will see a similar reading too.

Thanks for that Timddo..... I checked, and my readings are the same as yours, .03 volts from the negative terminal.

So, I have nothing to worry about then!

    cheers,
    Mike
