I recently replaced one and personally for the time spent mucking around and a couple of hundred bucks or so I reckon you'd be better off just replacing it.

    Matt,
Are you talking about the helm end, when you say you have taken out the steering mechanism?
To remove the cable at the helm end, remove the cover from the back of the helm, where the cable goes in,and then turn the wheel to worm out the inner part of the cable. There should be a locking pin,for the outer part of the cable,in most cases, that has to removed first.
    Say,how about a pic,that will help us.

Just check the tube on the motor first sometimes they jam up from lack of grease or rust/dust also the steering rod may have been bent causing it to jam i had a brand new one get stood on once and had to cut it off with a grinder to get it out.Thats when i changed to hydraulic bullhorn type no more ####ups!.Dan.........

Thanks for the responses, my son in law had it checked out today and the unit at the helm end was stripped inside and they found the cable to be a little stiff so he bought a new unit for less than $300 so i will have to fit it some time this week i guess ,[he is not mechanically minded] thanks for the help though guys its good to know their is always someone to bump ideas of here thanks again ....matt

I fixed mine recent;y. It was jammed at the tilt tube end, lack of grease. Keep the grease up to it in the tube, regularly a couple of pumps will do it.

mine is in getting fixed now......the seal had got abit crappy and let water in which caused some rust on the arm......they use oil in the steering not greas so it would probebly need pulling out,new oil and a new seal put in.
