Where to buy dry ice?

Hi guys im wondering if any of you know a good place to buy dry ice on the northside of Brisbane. I have rang BOC and they only sell pellets. Are pellets as good as block for keeping stuff cold for 4days? I will need 4 days worth of ice so how much do i need and what is a reasonable price to pay per kg. I was quoted $46 for 4days of block ice from a store on the southside and i think thats expensive and i dont want to drive far. So does anyone know where to buy Dry Ice on the Northside?

There is a Brisbane or Queensland Ice Sales at Virginia on the corner of Toombul rd & Spiers that sells dry ice. There usually open early don't know cost or a contact number though.

block lasts longer than pellets. Blocks are normally sold as "X" day blocks. eg: a 5 day block, or a 7 day block. It all has to do with the dry ice converting itself back to carbon dioxide gas and the bigger it is the longer it take. pellets have massive surface area and disappear fairly quickly.

Trick with dry ice is not to use the dry ice for the main cooling of the esky. Use the dry ice instead to keep normal ice frozen and you will have much better results. Make sure you have a drain in your esky to ensure water doesn't build up as that can attack the dry ice. Wrap your dry ice in paper and set it in a dry corner of the esky preferably elevated of the bottom a little bit (use a baking rack of couple of sticks of wood) then ice down your esky like normal with all of your food. Put frozen stuff in closer to the dry ice and it will stay that way longer. Use salted water in big water bottles to make longer lasting wet ice as well.

Talk to the supplier when you get hold of the block dry ice. They will tell you all oft he tricks to make it last as long as possible.

Another thing... one 7 day block will be gone in 7 days. 2 of the 7 day blocks will also be gone in 7 days.......... Doubling up only helps to keep a bigger esky cool -it won't last any longer.

The best place to get Dry Ice is from Brisbane Ice Works at Hemmant . It only takes me 35 minutes from Burpengary and they make the blocks while you wait. An 8 day block is about $55 . The dry ice you get from a lot of the other suppliers comes from there anyway and are just stored in their freezers and are often not full size , depending on how long they have been in their freezer.

Caboolture Ice sells dry ice, as well as big bags of party ice and block ice too. theyre just off the bruce highway at the bribie turn off. They need 48 hours notice though and the blocks are always at least the size theyre sposed to be if not bigger. Price wise theyre slightly dearer than hemmant but much cheaper for locals to get from there instead of driving to hemmant.

I MAY BE WRONG but isnt dry ice a bloke ice with pool salt spread over then wrapped in a old towel.
Test it out with two cups of frozen water one with one without the salt.
So ive been told.

dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide (CO2). CO2 is usually found as a gas -- it's what we exhale. To make dry ice, CO2 is compressed, and it liquefies at a pressure of approximately 870 pounds per square inch. The dry ice press then reduces the pressure, and part of the liquid CO2 sublimates (meaning it turns from a solid into a gas). The remaining liquid freezes into flakes that are compacted into solid blocks. The resulting dry ice is denser, heavier, and colder than ice made from water.

ensure you are careful with dry ice and do not lave in a locked up car as carbon dioxide is heavier than oxygen it will remove it from the area, reports have been made over the years of people passing out when coming back to the car after leaving it locked up, can be very dangeroues, oh and dont touch very bad cold burns from it also. cheers Lee
