Surf spinning reels

I am putting a spinning kit together and want ideas on reels. all advice will be appreciated.

I don't really use spinning reels on the beaches much. I'm an Alvey man. But my grandfather used a penn 850 SS for a very long time, and another common reel is the Shimano Tss4, both are really rugged, will cope with a bit of sand and last a while if cared for well.

If I am waist deep in the suds trying to reach an outside bank then I feel pretty comfortable with my trusty old TSS4 .



Then again with one of the new fangled distance casting sticks and high performance reels I could have stayed back where I parked the car

I have a high speed 2.1 to 1, 6.5 inch alvey, great reel but very hard to find.
Not many reels can take a dunking like an alvey can.

Whats your budget, Lock?
Cheapish, Banax or TSS4, dearer Daiwa Emblem Pro, dearest Van Staal or Zeebaas.
Ranging from around $150 ish to $1500ish!
Quality second hand is not to be despised either.
I use two Penn Spinfishers, SS550 and SS750, paid $150 for the pair, prob $50 for new bearings for both, they run almost like new, tho' they don't quite look it!
Lots of options mate, comes down to what you want to spend and how soon you want to get fishing.
Maintainance is paramount for whatever you buy IMO, although the VS and Zeebaas are sealed and supposedly almost maintainance free. Damned expensive tho'!

i use the trusty tss4 but will be upgraiding to the daiwa emblem soon
allthough ill still mainly use the tss4 of the beach as i wouldnt mind it getting sandy and wet as it easy to service (and being a bit cheaper)
but the emblem will be for the stones

The older Penn 704'S and 706's have a great track record.They can survive serious dunkings and are really easy to maintain.Becoming collectable these days though.

Thanks for the advice fellas. I am willing to spend up to $400 for somthing worth while I have thought about the tss4 . I have baitrunner 6500b but thats a for a different job altogether. A mate of mine recomends penn all the way but they do seem heavier than other models. The daiwa emblem is a nice reel to. .... Gees so many reels but not enough money Thanks for all the advice cheers lock.

I use the Penn 850ss and its never missed a beat, great drag system and sturdy metal construction, what more could you want!
