I have just handled my TYR30 for first time.
Does anyone use this reel for bottom bashing and how do they cope wiht the obvious bulkinesssize?
In size comparisons alone - where do the Saltist reels rate with the TYR30?
I woudl hope considerably smaller.

I used a tyrnos 30 exclusively when I went fishing north QLD a month ago. 1st time I have ever used one. Initially I thought they were a big reel. But after using it for 5mins, its a very well balanced reel and never seemed to "feel" heavy. It doesn't rotate at all in your hands either like some reels do, It only weighs a couple hundred grams more than the saltist. I found it a pleasure to use.
and when you get a decent fish on you feel confident of getting it in.
The saltist is a star drag reel which doesn't have as much drag pull as the tyrnos (tynos is 17-18kg of drag pull due to being lever drag).The saltist around 12kg i think)
But the saltist is a very refined reel, i personally would be happy to use either.
The saltist is more along the lines of the shimano torium. they both have 6:1 ratio where the tyrnos is 5:1.
The Tyrnos im my opinion is a pure trolling,live bait and hardcore bottom bouncing outfit.
The saltist is more versatile, you can do all of the above+ jigging etc with the saltist, but with slightly less drag pull

Just remember 5kg or 10kg doesnt sound like much but try holding 10kg of drag with out pulling hooks etc

How does the overall dims (excluding weight) comapre TYR30 to Saltist 40/50?

What reels rotate in your hand - why?
Is the TYR30 or Saltist better for not pulling hooks?

the wider the spool on an overhead tends to make the rod twist/roll in your hand, this is easily eleminate by a rod bucket (support around your waist to put rod but in), the rods have a notched out but that fits over a pin in the bucket.
takes a lot of back muscle to fish 10kg of drag and when you get the fish in you
are well aware of muscles you didnt know you had, 18kg would nearly see you pulled off the boat.
Not enough drag will see an extended drag on a big fish (can be a good thing with a fish with a soft mouth so the hooks dont pull

just bought a live fibre and but does not have notch to slide over the bucket pin. i also have a rod bucket with that pin.
how do i accomodate this rod without the notch in it's butt??

A higher ratio means less torque. if your fishing shallow water reefs(like up far north) then trust me, you will need that 17-18kg of dragif your strong enough to handle it.
I got busted up plenty of times on my tyrnos 30, using 80lb line crounching in the bottom of the boat trying not to fall in..lol if you wanna stop a big trout,cod,red etc then tyrnos is for you.
But if i was going to get a reel to do a bit of everything, i'd use a saltist.
PS:- when im floating out a big livey on my tyrnos i tend to fish with a tekota 700..similar to the saltist but with a level wind
was your 80lb line mono or briad?

For a reel to use fishing all the time I'd have to say the Tyrnos is to bulky. I use 80lb mono on it.
I fish mostly with a tekota 700 reel, which is the same as a saltist but with a level wind. this reel is superb to use all day long.
I usually bust out the Tyrnos when somhting huge busts me up on my tekota
so if you are compairing reels, I'd be more inclined to compare the saltist V Tekota

THe Tekota has less gear ratio (4.2:1) when comapred to Saltist (4.9:1) - How does this rate when catching fish?
What is the max drag on Tekota 700 v Saltist 30H?
You seem to be one of very few who prefer the level wind. Your reasons for going the level wind choice?

Dont get a high retrieve rate for a bottom fishing reel , you'll hate it, 4:1 or a bit less is a good rate!

I personally find the level wind more pleasurable to fish with, its not a big deal really as once you get used to no level wind it doesn't make much of a difference, Level winds can stuff up if you fish to heavy a line on the reel. eg 80lb on a tekota 700. but over all its a personal preference that doesn't make much of a difference. Me personally, i like the ease of a level wind.
as to Drags, I know the Tekota 700 and 800 are rated at 24lb of drag pull out of the box. I cant find any info on how good the saltist is, but being a star drag like the tekota im assuming very similar drag pull.
I fish a tekota 700, 50lb mono on a 15-24 live fiber rod.
and my Tyrnos 30 with 80lb Mono on a G-force 24kg gary howards Rod.
Used both up north few weeks back, I couldn't be happier. Pulled in some stonker fish I usually woulda missed previous years using my TLD and charter special reels.
