What is the ideal length for a boat road bottom bashing/jigging with an overhead for big reef fish off GOVE NT? (I am 6'2" tall)

What is the best size (weight wise) reel for this application?

Are all these rods suited for an overhead?
Can I get the Backbone Elite without the roller tip? Is this roller tip potentially bad for getting braid caught?
Should I aim for a long butt on one of these rods?

My personal choice for Bottom Bashing/Jigging would be a Torium 20 and Tcurve Deep Jig 200 Overhead, 80lb braid.

What I use for the lighter casting for tuna, running floaters for macks ect is a Penn Applause 6000 and Tcurve Kingmack Spin, 30lb braid.

Thats what I would choose.

I wouldnt discredit the Deep jig because they are 'thin'. They are a solid graphite rod.
Reason I choose the Torium instead of the Tyrnos is size mostly. Find the Torium 20 a beautiful reel to use, nice and small and light but grunt like you wouldnt believe. I fish 100lb which is way over the top but reel seems to handle it no worries.
TCurve 200 is my choice as a compromise between jigging and bottom bashing. You can get better jigging rods OR bottom bashing rods for the money (half the money for bottom bashing) but the tcurve is nice and light and does both fairly well. Also has a decieving amount of grunt when you load it up. Never heard of one snapping on a fish.

Do u think length is important in a boat?

THe torium looks the goods - but sounds expensive - more thatn the TYR30 - correct?

Dont want a rod that is too long. Around the 6ft mark is as long as I would want to go. Leverage starts to dramitically work against you.
Torium is around the $280 mark. Maybe a little less if you use the internet or bargain hard. Would try for a free or discounted load of braid in with the deal.

Or you can get one out of the US for cheaper again. Could understand if you wanted to buy local though.

When I compared the specs from TYR30 to the Torium, the Torium sounds better
and is smaller, but is similarly priced ($300 for TYR30).

Do u think the specs for Torium are better than the TYR30?

Your thoughts on the Gary Howard G-Force Series, Backbone ELite vs the TCurve 200's?

Re: length of rod, why do some forum users swear by the 7' Lite Fibres over the smaller ones??

I like the high speed of the Torium. Once again its persnal preference. Have played with the Tyrnos a little. Was on my list for a while but just a bit bulky and heavy for my style of fishing. If you were doing alot of trolling for Sails and Marlin I would look at the Tyrnos a bit closer. Do you have the chance to play with the 2 together?

Have not seen the Gary Howard rods or Lite Fibres (Live Fibre?) so cant relly comment on them.
Backbone Elite is suited to bottom bashing more than jigging. Glass/graphite composite with alo of glass by memory. Means its gonna be a tough rod and take a few bumps in the boat, better than the Tcurve in that way. TCurve is going to be alot more responsive though. Backbone do come with a standard tip, not just a roller too. Im with you on the dislike for roller tips.

Agree with you 100% on the rod and reel choice, another reel to use as a compromise if mainly bottom fishing is the Tekota 700 or 800, has a level wind which comes in handy using braid

Theres always a smart arse. 100% right as well.
Mate has 2 Tekotas and loves them. Fished alongside him but not used them myself. Good option if you wanted the levelwind. Really does come down to what you personally like the feel of.

Bottom fishing i have found that you need a stiff rod so you can get them off the reef and in the boat before the man in grey suits get the fish.
Went out friday and lost too many fish to ether a; the fish went into the bombys or b; the sharks got them.
I am in the process of getting a new combo now and it will be a tld25 with 80lb braid on a 25-30kg roller tipped rod(not sure on the rod brand yet)

I would have thought before i fished up here that this would be a overkill, but each and every trip there is a number of good fish that got away and it sucks!
BIG macks are aplenty up here and im sick off them getting away

Tell me about it. I fish 100lb over a Angler Tuna Troller (broomstick) and go hard (I'm 6'4 and 125kg) when the sharks are thick. Was fishing to of the Tiwi Islands a couple of weeks ago and got blown away all over the place. Either bricked or sharked. And only in 11m of water. Fine line between pulling hooks and skull dragging fish in past the sharks sometimes. Fast retrieve sure helps.

i am in the same situation potentially - not tried yet.

I have just committed to the 7' live fibre and TYR30 with 50lb braid.

After reading these last two posts, i think i probably made a mistake in getting a lightish rod...

Thoughts?
