Merc BlackMax 135HP
Good, bad or ugly???
Has anyone had any experience with these engines?
Roughly what vintage are they?

Re: Merc BlackMax 135HP
Hi Hamish...A local fella here owns one and has never had any problems......The Mercury mechanic from down south who does all our work told him that they are a very good ...strong motor....one of the better mercurys that were built....I am pretty sure they are the same block as the 150...175...and 200...

Re: Merc BlackMax 135HP
g'day hamish, i've got a 92 model with 455 hours on it and it goes like a champion. they're pretty simple and bulletproof. they chew through petrol at high loads and revs but if that's not an issue then they're a top workhorse. things to check are the trim/tilt cylinder/motor because they've been known to be a little dodgy but there's an aftermarket one available to replace it. check all the wiring loom under the cowl where they tie the wires together, they tie it at the connectors and they burn through and short. get a reputable mechanic to inspect it, the money is well spent.

Re: Merc BlackMax 135HP
What year engine is it Hamish. The early models 1978-1980 were not real good. 80-85 were good. 86 on have been excellent.
cheers

Re: Merc BlackMax 135HP
no sure what year, but I'd be guessing early 80's
Been advised to give the boat in question a wide berth so not to worry.
Thanks for your input anyway.
