Abr - Sidewinder Units With Acc Italy Compressor

    Hi folks

Anyone know anything about these fridge/freezers?

Saw them on ebay for $895.00 drive away.

Only 12 months warranty on cabinet and 3 years on compressor.

I've had a bit of a look at them on here http://www.sidewinder.com.au/
The guy that imports them (Derek Bester) has only been doing these fridges for a few months. I don't think anywhere else sells them yet.
I'm not sure how many of them are actually out there being used at this point. I'm a bit hesitant to get one given that they are so new. The compressor isn't new at all though - it seems to be a good unit.

Couple of other things worth noting:
    - The fridge/freezer compartments can't be changed. Evakool fridges allow you to change them. The 10/40 split is probably about right though, provided you never need much freezer space.
    - They're pretty heavy (28kg I think). Probably means they are solidly built, but might be a hassle moving them around.

I'd suggest contacting Derek via his website for more info.

For the price I'd go the Evakool Fridgemate, 55 Litres for $969. And as chisel said, you can change the compartments around. Saw a display one the other day, they filled a 70L with water and turned it on. At full power it has frozen the entire 70L of water. Quite impressive.

    David,

I think the biggest factor you need to weigh up is.... power.... these things are only 12v so it's restricted in that area. It's always a bit suss when there's no feedback on the product but try some of the camping & 4wd chat boards & see if anyone has any reviews on it. It's still alot of money to hand over for something that doesn't suit you. Spend time doing your homework & you'll save some dollars & heartache.

I know a bloke that has one of these fridge/freezers..........They draw 5 amps

I don't think they draw 5 amps. Maybe up to about 4 maximum but average much less. Here's the test results on the ABR-Sidewinder site http://www.sidewinder.com.au/page125a.html
Avg in test was 1.35amps but not sure how often the fridge was opened.

Sorry to disappoint you Chisel but seen it with my own eyes. He runs it thru an amp gauge and it draws 5 amps.

As far as freezing the whole 70 litres; ice forms at 0c so no big deal. One of my mates re plumbed a freezer and it ended up going down to -34c; now thats cold. So cold that when I poured the warm rum in the glass it blew the ice up totally out of the glass as well as the rum. I just sold a sabec 60 litre FZ that would go down to -18c and a gasalec fridge that would go down to 2c. If a fridge is working properly it should be cycling out and not drawing power the whole time.

What you need to look at with any fridge is the average amps per hour. While the fridge will draw 5 amps while the motor is operating it doesn't operate all the time. So over an hour it will drop to the level that Derek Bester shows in his report.

    Cheers

    Derek
