Not enough time in the day, to many spots to fish!
Some speci's for u to consider;
Evinrude 115 Etec
60 deg V4, 1726cc, 167kg
Bore x stroke 94x66mm
133/50amp charging
gear ratio 2:1
Mercury Optimax
3 inline cylinders, 1526cc, 170kg
Bore x Stroke - 92x76mm
60amp/750watt charging
Gear ratio 2.07:1
Tohatsu Tldi
4 inline cylinders, 178kg, 1768cc
Bore x Stroke - 88x72.7
12v/40amp charging
gear ratio 2:1
As a Tldi owner, Id seriously consider it over the other two for a number of reasons. One being cost and reliabilty, although resale and dealer back up is questionable on this. Also the props on the tohatsu's are rubbish in my opinion and a suitable stanless blade would need to be factored into the cost.
The optimax, in my opinion is not as smooth, quiet, or smoke free as either the Tldi or the etec. Its a whopping big motor especially when compared to the V4 evinrude and this can be a problem depending on the set up @ the transom. Its bore & stroke suggest plenty of ooomph however and I can vouch for this in the 75 that is fitted to my oldmans boat.
The pic of the bunch perhaps is the etec. Lighter, powerful, supposedly cheaper to run. Good ratio, stainless props as standard and one would expect good resale value from it also.
Of course others will perhaps disagree, but hey......as Ben Cousins gut tells us such is life!
THank Coota.
When I read about the etec's on other Forums (US), freshwater applications seem to dominate the use of these etecs..
AM i mising somehting here - have the etecs primarily been designed with freshwater (mostly) applications...?
When I compare the etec 150 to the Yami 150, the etec is 30kg lighter. Is this weight difference significant for my rig (5.3m Haines Hunter deep vee around 750kg...?

HI Paddles - so which brand donk have you got now?
When did your mechanic say this (2005, 2006 or 2007)?
SPlash
splash, there is a review on the yamaha website comparing etec to yamaha 4 stroke and hpdi for 150 horse power range
Thanks TIm.
THe Darwin Yami dealer sent me these reviews and really no difference when you look at the numbers of speed, range and fuel economy - yet the yami blurb exagerates these numbers over ETEC IMHO and have basically discounted this Yami review. WOudl prefer an indepent review with real torque curves. the Yami dealer said they coudl not supply me with any YAmi torque figures when I compare to etec - for some reason..

Anthony:
What size e-tec are you running and on what boat and how many hours do you have up.
I have a 580 breeze, 160 litre fuel tank, 150 e-tec and use nowhere near that much oil. Wouldn't even use 3/4 litre of xd100 per tank.
Anthony, they are great oil figures. Lets hope for your sake there not too great![]()

If fuel injected 2-storke is the way of the future should I hold off buying my next car?
Bustasu.
WHat made u choose the 150 etec over the rest?
What key performance criteria did u have?

Splash:
Reason for choice: Gut feeling and also having a little bit of knowledge being an ex-mechanic.
Key Performance Criteria: Honestly - none. Just brochures on each motor, a test drive of each and word of mouth.
Hope I chose right, am happy so far.

Thanks BS.

Hi Everyone,
Its been a while since I posted this thread. Just thought I'd update you. I received a call, out of the blue, from Slades Marine about 2 months ago, referring to my posts on this forum and simply said I was informed "we want your business." This impressed me enough to make a trip down to Paradise Point to meet the man on the other end of the phone. Now, whilst the place is nothing to write home about, I was feeling all warm and fuzzy that someone was ambitious enough to ring me! Especially given that it was a good two weeks previously that I had window shopped for prices around the Coast on all makes of engines! Slades had the balls and intuitiveness to put 2 and 2 together and call me.
Now, they offered the best price and when I eventually decided to bite the bullet, they even managed to upsell me into a new hydraulic steering kit (upgrading from push-pull cable) to complement the new engine.
I went down there two days after dropping the boat off to find a majority of the work already completed!!! And they were not only pleased to see me but also had no problems spending time with me, showing me what they had done, explaining the process, answering my questions and making sure I was comfortable with everything.
Whilst I'm yet to pick up my boat once its ready, (I'm itching sooo bad to take her out), I wanted to let everyone know that "so far," everything is great, I feel I've made the right choice in engine and in dealer. Only time will tell once I'm on the water, but I have to say I'm brimming with confidence.... from all the great posts on this forum and from the fantastic service from the dealer so far.
Stay tuned...
