    Grunter

Is some one playing with me or is there such a fish called a grunter?
The fishing report for Baffle Creek said that good catches of grunter were being had during this last week. What does a grunter look like and how do I catch one.
I found photos of a striped fish from NT and FNQ but doubt if you would catch them in the Baffle.
    Thank you for any info

yes wally there is a fish called a grunter or (javalin fish) a grunter looks like a bream only bigger and has dark vertical bands down the side of its body.
when brought into the boat the will sometimes grunt.
MY Question is DO they actully grunt underwater?

Ive always thought that the "GRUNTER" was a very large bream ( only because peep's have told me this)... Ive pulled a couple from the broady , 28 + 35 cm , and yes once out of the water they make this distinctive grunting noise, didnt really notice the black vertical stripe'sthiough but indeed they definately looked like bream, personally I couldnt tell them apart!!

Yep as stated above similar characteristics to bream but have distinctive black markings, also have a more elongated head than bream. Just remember they have a size limit of 30cm.

I too can vouch for that. Just returned from Lucinda a couple weeks ago and there were Grunters galour.

They put up a great fight when hooked also, even a small one puts up a decent fight.

When I caught one I put it in a large bucket of water to keep it alive for awhile until I decided weather to keep to eat or release. While swimming around it continued to grunt quite loudly.

I ended up relesing the first one but kept the second due to the fact this was my first Grunter Bream and people were raving on about what great eating they are so I thought I'd try one.

It was good eating but the Trevally I caught a couple of days before was just as good if not better(maybe I was more hungry)

No issue with picking the difference between a bream & grunter .... Regardless of the grunt ..... chalk & cheese really ( I had no problem picking my first ... from a bream) .... Much longer body (slender toward the tail) & a more angled head shape! .............. & great on the tooth ....mmmm ... Nagg

Grunter are great to catch and eat. And yes, I agree that they also grunt when under water. Now you have to catch a catfish and discover why they are called catfish. Ok, it's because they actually mew like a cat. However, all things being what they are, you really have to now catch a Tripletail and discover why they are called tripletails.

    WHAT!!??...........Are you taking the P***!?

Seriously!?............Firstly are you talking about Eel Tail Catfish or Fork Tail Catfish?

I used to catch dozens of Eel Tail Catfish in the creek on our farm when I was a kid and NONE of them ever Meowed like a cat.

Here's a clue......Catfish have Whiskers. Freshwater Eel Tail Catfish are also good eating.

I don't know much about Forktail Catfish but I did catch a couple once but somebody also called them dogfish. They too had Whiskers but grunted when landed. I heard they were bad eating.

The big blue forktail catfish up here in the Fitzroy (Rockhampton) and in the estuaries really DO mew like a cat. Thats not the beer talking, I dont drink alcohol. You really do have to catch a Trippletail to see what they are. The trippletails fight so hard that AGFA chase them as well.
I never eat any catfish. I caught one once that had a used condom in its throat, was full of worms and I have never touched them since except to use as crab pot bait if I catch one. Catfish? AARRGHH! YUCK
They sell farmed catfish in the USA but I still couldn't eat one when I was over there for 7 years. YUCK-YUCK
