Motorola GP68 Radio

Hi folks.
I was thinking of buying this hand-held VHF radio for use in the boat.
Specs say:
The GP68 is a 136-174 MHz Freq Unit.
Weight: 404g
Compact High Power (4/5W)
Voice Selective Call & SmarTrunk II Capable
Wideband VHF
20 Channels

I think the frequency range will be OK for marine use, but it has a little stubby aerial, typical of hand-helds.
Any thoughts on its suitability for the boat? What sort of range would this get on the water?
I was thinking of using it as a backup in the boat (I have an Icom M402 on board), but also in the yak when my mate is in his boat on the river.
Think it would do the job?
