    Question Camping Bribie Weekend

    Hi All

Thought we would take a short break at the weekend and go up Bribie beach for the night.

As the tides were pretty high at the weekend by the time we got over there the only way to go was up high in the soft. We decided to spull in just off the cutting and wait around instead of driving through all the mush.

There was a guy doing a 4x4 course, instructing about 4 with their little honda crv,s and rav 4,s. Abit of experience in the soft and getting out of the bog. ?????
That was fine until he decided to take them up the beach a little, get them bogged and leave them sit there so he could show everyone else how you do it.

Plenty of 4b's still wanting to go up the beach but you guessed it--- the tide was way in and guess who and what was in the way. What a shambles. Apart from that it was fun to sit back and watch, thinking they will get bogged, no they won't.
With the couple of other families with us we had a great laugh as they all went by. Trailers , jet ski's, campers.
We were thinking of getting the cards out and giving them a score out of ten for just attempting the drive up the beach at high tide.

For the majority of them they made it up without incident, for some of them it probably got abit hair raising at times. Especially the guy bogged with the jetski. Waves coming in and you are bogged to the axles, must of been in a bit of a panic.
There is a safety issue in all of this. It only takes one small instance and you could be stuck in the drink.

We could of made it up in our 4b but decided to drive 16 k's in soft sand with the waves lapping right up to us was abit unsafe so we sat around until the tide went out a little.

I know we had abit of a laugh at the efforts of others and the thoughtlessness of the 4b instructor but the underlaying issue here is your safety and the safety of others.

When would you think twice about not going up the beach when its high tide?

Incidentally we had a great night up there. Not much fishing as the water was dirty, plenty of weed and bluebottles.

yiu see it all the time on Bribie, I'm a regular on the beach but usually try to plan my drivin for low tide. I have had to recover a couple of veichles up near the campsites that have gotten bogged at high tide with the water still rising. It is a worry when this happens as they endanger their own veichle as well as the good citizen who recovers them. There is a inland track up to the campsites now which enables high tide access which is about time as it is a bit of a safety issue if a accident was to occur while camping and it's a king tide..

excellent question SBM,,,, and one that i have asked our local ranger stacey

to gain access,,, you first have to traverse along the tracks on the ""calm side"" that generally lead to gallaghers/poverty and the recently opened lighthouse areas,,,, sounds easy,,,,, ALAS you need a permit to travel on this track,,,,,$$$$$

to gain access to the beach front,,,, again a permit is required,,,,,,but it is fact that the beach is not patrolled as heavily as the calm side tracks,,, as the calm side attracts more overnite stayers that haven't paid additional $$$ for camp site areas,,,,and access to this area does not require a 4b,,,,,,, the track itself can be used up to gallaghers in a normal day to day vehicle with no probs,,,(warning tho',,, signs are erected that stipulate 4x4 only)

my query to our ranger,,, is simple,,,, if you have someone that accesses the beach with no permit,,, the chances of being caught using the new inland track is what???????

the amount of times that i have had my permit checked on the beach opposed to the calm is one sided,,, but that said,, the amount of time that i have been on the calm side for a quick trip far outweighs the other

either way,,, we loose,,,, and since the forestry has taken over from the council the fee's have risen astronomanicly,,,,,,,,,,,

back to your question tho',,,, inland track,,,,, calm side

The inland track starts from White Patch which as choppa said it's on the calm side just past Banksia Beach ( where a couple of handsome Ausfishers live ) The track is long and boreing but you reach a nice picnic spot on the calm side on the way. The track eventualy comes out at the most northernest campsite.

thanks for that info. We were due to go up to Bribie beach side this Friday for two nights, but have pushed it back a night due to weather.

Is the inland track subject to weather? I'll be towing a camper trailer behind a 4Runner. I've been to Moreton with the same combo heaps and had no troubles.

yeah choppa, you're right about the fees going up. but when the council administered it all they did absolutely nothing in the way of improvements. at least the national parks guys are doing an awesome job adding/maintaining tracks and constructing dunnies etc.

Inland track is fine ,and with the recent rain youll be better off .The lagoons would be bursting by now ,make any crossing a lowtide exercise.
Compare to Moreton Bribie is an easy beach to drive ,having sais that check the tides as the beach narrow and close in completely on higher tides.

paddles,,,, agree 250% ,,,,, the forestry haven't been backward in forward improvements in any way whatsoever

it's a catch 22 tho',,,, their improvements have made it easier to access areas that normally wouldn't see a car/truck tyre

that stated,,, my reply stands alone as the campsites at gallaghers/poverty have improved enormously

wont be long before mcdonalds cotton onto it

    Hi Guys

How far do you travel along inland track? Is it about the same as the beach.

Thanks for the info and just for a change might check it out next time instead of going up the beach way.

Thanks guys for the info and I do agree that it is not bad camping Bribie and I only hope that it stays pretty much unchanged for a few more years yet. It is a little touch of paradise right on our doorstep!!!!!

    Re: Camping Bribie Weekend

The inland track takes a bit longer than along the beach as it's a slower paced trip and not a straight route. Personally I think it's only worth using for tidal reasons as the beach way is quicker, smoother and more attractive but good for something different and a bit of adventure.

agreed choppa, we've been going up there for a little while now. in the early nineties when we first left school you could go up there for a few days surfing and fishing during the week, take your dog, camp out and see no-one all week. having national parks regulate the area is tops considering how many people go up there now. haven't tried the new inland track though. we used to go up the road at the cinema and cut through the pineys sometimes but the beach track was only part way up the beach.

Hey guys how much are the camping and beach permits (year long) now? Looking at getting one after the 4b gets fixed.

    Cheers, Mick.
