Thread: Poll How do you Flush outboard Motors?

Re: Poll How do you Flush outboard Motors?

    That's a top idea Gary,

Since the engine's already warm, you don't have to waste water waiting for the thermostat to open & another plus is that the salt hasn't dried up yet.

think i might start doing that.

    Cheers,
    Mick.

I use muffs for 3-5 mins......however, with the drought in Victoria I think it is not legal to flush motor this way.

Screw on fitting only (for Yamaha 4-stroke) per manufactures' spec. No muffs. No probs. Water out of tell-tale tastes fresh. 10 min. straight onto lawn. Tried the BCF pop-up flushing 'bucket' but wastes far too much water - waste of money & water.

Re: Poll How do you Flush outboard Motors?

Just spoke to my mechanic re Yamaha flushing > The smaller range of motors have pressure pumps whereas the larger range have volume pumps.
So, the smaller range he suggested using muffs and the larger range using attachment only per manufacturer's recommendation. He did say that because they're volume pumps they do struggle with garden hoses and DON'T require water coming out of the tell-tale hole, as long as the water exits the mesh section above the trim plate. NOTE - if you want to run the motor for some reason, then muffs ARE required no matter what size donk. A large body of water e.g. fresh water dam is ideal though.

    Poll no 382.
By ear muffs for 10 mins, while unloading & cleaning the boat.
Thanks for the tip on those fold up buckets.

Exclamation Re: Poll How do you Flush outboard Motors?

With ~70% of people having a boat smaller than 6.0m according to poll (>see: http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/sho...t=size+of+boat) you would assume they fall into the 'smaller range' motor which requires muffs as they have high pressure water pumps or are possibly older 2st models without flushing attachments so this poll appears accurate as expected.

Hi All and particularly to the 7 (abt 2%) who never flush their motors.

Can you please advise how long you keep your motors? and

Has this caused you any problems with your motors?

I asked because even though about 70% flush with muffs and other do use flushing are we, the majority, wasteing our time?

    Cheers

Chimo I would say that most of these 7 use their boat in freshwater only hopefully they aren't doing this after going in saltwater

Re: Poll How do you Flush outboard Motors?

my father in his time had never flushed a motor in his life he had worn out a dozen motors but none had ever died from corroded water jackets. he was a pro fisherman. i think regular usage is more the savour less chance of oxidation of the block must remember these were all 2 strokes. Which raises a interesting question are 4 strokes more likely to corrode in there heads because of less oily fume pick up as the water pump sucks near the exhaust when idling. secondly should we be flushing motors with a addative to coat the block same as the standard car engine rather than just flushing with water.

Re: Poll How do you Flush outboard Motors?

Most of the time see's me backing the boat down the ramp into the local freshwater river on the way home. Gives it a good flush for 5-10mins while I am in the boat and its in forward gear (mainly to put more pressure on the motor and heat it quicker) as I clean up other gear. Gives the trailer and brakes a good salt clean off as well.

Otherwise it is at home with the muffs.
