Thread: Poll How do you Flush outboard Motors?

Re: How do you fluch your motor. POLL

We flush with the muffs on and engine running that way the impellers get cleaned of any particulate that might have gotten through. If I were in salt water I would flush every time I pull the boat out especially if the engines were designed for fresh water. Salt is the enemy

Had to use barrel for the Yammie 60 4 st before I got double sided water inlet muffs . The single water connection muffs seemed to create an airlock. All good now. 10 mins on muffs, 5 on the plug and a real good squirt back into the prop.

Where do you get double sided muffs or did you make them?

Re: Poll How do you Flush outboard Motors?

    Hi Chimo,

Picked them up at one of the local chandleries (Marineline 03 62310346) by chance. They are Eastern Marine brand so assume they should be readily available however haven't seen them anywhere else. I first heard of them (and home made versions) on another forum after I was searching for why I was having problems getting good flow from the std muffs.

Anyway for $20 I now have no probs.

    Cheers - Fred

Evin 115 DI. 5-10 mins on muffs every time, with plenty of water out of the telltale. Let in run into a container, and then chuck it on the garden.

Off town water at the moment ( about 150 lt ), but hopefully tank soon. Might look at putting a tap connector on a bunning 120lt box, and then feeding that into jet washer for the boat, but that need a slight flow rate to work.

Muffs for 10 mins, as we take the gear out the boat.

My understanding is its the same as washing your mask & snorkel in fresh water to stop them from perishing. I have seen that if you don't wash them 12 months is all it takes for them to perish. I flush with muffs all the time, except if I'm going out in the next couple of days. If I come home late at night & don't want to stir up the neighbours & know i'm heading within a few days. Then I will let it pass. The wives tail I have been told is don't turn on your tap till your engine has been started because the water pressure from the tap will poke all the flaps on the rubber impellor in the wrong direction. I don't know the in's an out's of it but I can assure you I have seen rubber seals carve out steel shafts when run dry. Three seconds run dry is what my manual specifies as the amount of time to do damage. I guess what I am saying is start the tap then start your engine

OK, so what do I do in this instance? We have a 4hp Mercury recently purchased for the tender. The boat will be dry stored on racks (on the waiting list) at Horizon Shores.

I was told the 4hp can't use muffs, so we'll have to use a bucket of fresh water. How does one do that up in a rack??

That's where all our drinking water goes.. 10min @ 22l/m is 220 litres (44 gall drum) of water down the drain. It's about time they invented something that dosen't need flushing.

Ahhhh...don't worry about me, I discovered the Flush Bag. Cool invention, and local too.

    Excellent!

    Gday
Muffs and running for 5 minutes after for sake of engine / also 5 mins running with muffs the day before a fishin day, only for the sake of checking battery condition and charge at home, rather than at the ramp in the dark pissed off

    Cheers

I have a 20 litre drum of water - one of those standard chemical drums,

The tap thread is some standard size - so you can fit garden hose fittings. Add to that a short length of hose and hold the drum high and fit the other end to muffs or the direct flushing attachment.

So with this I flush 20 litres through the motor while it’s still warm, on the ramp if no one is about or in the rigging area.

I figure 20 litres straight away is better that 100 litres an hour later after I get home

Let me know if my explanation wasn’t clear enough.
