There's a free GPS waypoint tool called Noni GPSPlot that accepts .MAP files ( OziExplorer format ).

There's a free google map stealing tool that creates .MAP files from google maps called GoogleMV

I'm going up to Hervey Bay this weekend, so I grabbed the entire section from Google Maps around HB to Bundaberg over the the western side of Fraser. Had to use another tool called mapsplit ( from the Noni website ) to break up the map into small enough chunks for the GPSPlot tool to accept.

I then made a KML file from Google Maps with a bunch of GPS marks from the internet for that area, and important that in as POIs.

The tools are a bit clunky to use, but I've ended up with what seems to be a really solid ( yet free ) GPS navigation map to use while up there.
