Hit the shipping channel today with my brother Glenn (Cervelo) in search of some of the nice Snapps he picked up yesterday (see report). Everything was looking good with a great forecast, 100% solunar peak, perfect tides and a bit of colour in the water.
Left Manly at about 5.30am and headed to the eastern Bay via some isolated structures. Pretty quiet so we proceeded to our main destination and sent out a couple of big placky's for a swim. My rod went off in short time and I was attached to a freight train and down to backing in next to no time. Glenn quickly got the other rods in and off we went in pursuit. The leader broke after another 5 mins
. A big let down and things went quiet for a while

Another hour or so saw my Snapper Raider (loaded with a 7" Nuc Chook Gulp) bow over as a powerful fish took a long run. The fight was pretty predictable and before long a nice Bay Snapper just over 72cm was netted. This was my PB placky Snap so I was stoked
.
A few more drifts and we decided to seek greener pastures and tried a few other spots in the central/eastern bay area
Decided to return to the scene of the crime on the run out and started drifting again. I was fishing two rods with one with the bail open and in the rod holder just deadsticking. I was busy with the other rod when Glenn yelled that the line was flying off the spool. I grabbed the rod, flipped the bail over and off it went. The already deminished spool seemed to melt away and in the few moments it took to clear the rods etc and start chasing i emptied my spool down to the spool knot leaned as far foreward as I could and just waited for the line to snap. At that moment we got the boat moving and I gained a few metres of line. A couple more runs and a nice 71cm Snapper lay waiting to join the first one.
We tried for another hour or so before hitting some structure in the central bay where Glenn pulled a couple at 64cm and 48cm before we headed for home.
A great day out on the water and a new placky PB![]()
