Re: big pike eel
are you talking about those light brown skinny things that have teeth like a crocodile? we get them in the Ocean when drifting for Flathead, they are about 2 to 3 metres long and about as thick as a Garden Hose and cranky as all hell, they are also really tricky to get out of the boat, if you get one in it! that is

Re: big pike eel
slimy bastards, was holding one of about 2 meters around near its head with both hands with a rag, managed to slip out of my grasp somehow and swim away as if nothing had happened, fun on little tackle for the first run tho

Re: big pike eel
I love Grant's book of fishes description of them:
'No dinghy has been built big enough to hold one angler plus one Pike Eel..... makes a series of tail stands as it lunges about biting indiscriminately..... needs to be clubbed to control it but the angler needs to be pretty of his aim..... In years past I have seen ....one fisherman tried to subdue by stabing on it while.... the other took careful aim... and missed. His tomahawk took out a plank and in minutes all 3 occupants of the boat were swimming.'
Priceless.

Re: big pike eel
well I guess that answers my question, it is those long skinny light brown ones, they are a real handfull when you get one in the boat, and indeed they do stand up and bite like crazy.

Re: big pike eel
I went fishing one weekend with a mate who was catching eels to take home. The following weekend I was invited to my Vietnamese mates place for a big birthday party. 17 dishes of food were served at this banquet of about 150 family and friends and you guessed it pike eel made it onto the menu. I tell you what tho, I was very surprised how good it tasted as a sort of soup with light spices and herbs......very nice indeed. Of the 17 dishes served up that night there was not one i did not enjoy from beche de mer to jellyfish YES BLUE JELLYFISH to whiting and crabs and prawns as well as pork and chicken. Small serves of each but after 17 I was full.
An has since invited me back a few times for different parties and I always do my best to attend a new banquet.
Don't be too quick to think dirty scary slimy things we catch are going to taste crap. Some people are magicians with foods.

Re: big pike eel
Went crabbing in North Creek, Ballina and caught one in a crab dilly. The ell (a bloody big one) had tangled its teeth in the cotton mesh and had the net wrapped round its head. When we got it alongside the boat it went berserk and twisted itself around the wire hoop. By the time we managed to cut the net off the hoop was bent into a gentle spiral. Tried to do this myself on another dilly hoop and didn't even bend it a tiny bit.
Nasty creatures!
