    Townsville double header

Here’s a tip: never hit the BACKSPACE button while typing a new post – you lose it.

3rd time in an appropriate document editor – can’t fail (famous last words…)

    Okay as I was saying…

Thursday, I hit the Bohle for the last of the run-out and all of the run-in for little success: a couple of undersize bream, an u/s grunter and a small queenie that smashed a baited hook that was dangling in the water while I was having a drink. A bit disappointing but I haven’t fished it much and was glad for the opportunity to explore the lower reaches as well as the channel heading out to sea. Gee, those rock bars look good don’t they – can’t wait to try them with a bucket of decent sized livies and a big stick.

Friday, I decided, stuff it, I’m going to a favourite haunt where I KNOW where the fish hang out. Well, it was dead – the place usually lights up when you throw well-aimed placcies to structure but, no go. So, I thought bugger it, I’m here to relax so on goes a couple of bombers and I started a nice slow troll up and down the target zone. Second pass all hell breaks loose and I look aft to see a good 90cm of barra leave the water. Holy cow man! It leaves the water again for a huge headshake and chucks the lure. Arrgghh!!

Right so now I know there’s fish there so, I start to troll seriously and with a new motor with a steering pillar tightener, I can set the course and flick a barra-style placcie up into the shallows. I missed a goodish hit doing that then I got hammered by a ray, then unfortunately snagged a turtle (mostly for me because geez, they can fight). Finally retrieved my lure from a very cranky turtle and got to trolling again. No luck.

The tide turns and typically, this is when the fishing goes quiet so I opted to try a few different things and starting working the placcie over the shallower patches, allowing it to drop off into the deeper parts. Had another barra follow right up to the boat. No. Back to trolling; chuck on a big gold bomber and suddenly I start catching fish cod are fighting for a chance to get nailed and the GT’s are in on the action as well. Still no barra tho’ so I set up a drift over where the cod are nailing me and I work the rocks and ledges with the bomber. Snagged; dammit!! Hang on, what’s this? The rock suddenly takes off and Yeehah! It’s a barra. No smash, no boil, nothing; I must have chucked the bomber straight down its gob. At 76cm it put on a great fight, easily as good as some of the bigger models I’ve caught and tasted good too.

    ‘Night all.

Sounds like a good session there Mozza!

Good to see that you finally got what you were chasing in the Barra as well - good feed there

Certainly did better than I did this morning that's for sure!
    Regards,

    Andrew.

    Andrew,

I wasn't aiming for barra but when that first one spat the lure, nothing else mattered. I'm extremely one-eyed when it comes to barra...

How slow has the fishing been? All the local tackle shop owners are for once, not as gung-ho as usual. Things are quiet all round although persistence pays off - I liked Dipsters report. West Pt. and/or Burdekin Rock will be my next port of call.

    Cheers

excellent stuff mozza, sounds like alot of fun was had.

Just a quick intrusive question..... did you catch it by trolling a certian rock wall near the mouth of a river....

From my fishing attempts lately, it has been extremely quiet. Still waiting for that illusive barra, although todays attempt doeesn't help much (leaving the tackle box at home)

    Re: Townsville double header

    Thanks guys

Fisher4life, no, it wasn't but I've caught maybe 10 or so trolling the breakwater and rockwalls. Smallest 55cm, largest 113cm so yep when it gets warmer I'll be having a go at that.

    Cheers

Not wrong Mozza; definitely been quiet.

On the bright side though, I'm noticing that there are several things starting to happen that are indicating that the Jacks and Barra are coming back on the bite like bait being smashed every now and then .

Gotta admit thought I am definitely not a Winter fisherman (even here in Cairns) and my success during these months is less than impressive despite me putting in a bit of extra effort this year.

    Re: Townsville double header

    Well done Mozza,

You always seem to come with the goods. You work hard for a catch so you deserve it. I have had nothing but undersized grunter..............hopefully the Barra will play soon

    cheers

    Re: Townsville double header

Great report mozza, I reckon you deserve kudos for so flexible in your fishing style to suit the moment.

Your right about the rockbars at the mouth of the Bohle, if you can pick a weekday where there wont be a thoooooousand boats lined up, and a run out tide that has just enough flow to get the barra active. I have been fishing there before with Happy (aaron gilmour) and if the tide isnt too strong that your livies get swept up to the surface, barra and jacks just line up behind those walls and nail anything that comes past.

    Tight lines screaming drags.....

nice work Mozza, I decided to try my luck last night at the rockpool l/b but nothing, not a bite, even the stripey's weren't interested, can't wait till this wind pisses off.

    Re: Townsville double header

    Thanks again guys.

Dipster, Synful, Scott, Kev here's hoping that that the Summer season will be better than this Winter season. Still hoping to bag a Mackeral or 2 before they completely disappear for another year.

    See you on the water.

    Re: Townsville double header

This winter season was ok until we got the cold snap, then everything really went quiet, once it started to warm up a bit the winds kicked in and I've caught very little since. Hopefully my luck will change this weekend, I was going down to Airlie beach for the weekend fishing, but my deckie girled it up and gave in to his missus, so I'm stuck here and we'll try our luck at Saunders, don't know what day we are going yet.
