Thumbs up Townsville Late Report 11th August

    G'Day all,
have been a little busy at work lately and therefore havent had a chance to post.

My wife Mel and I launched at Ross creek at 5am for an easy run around to West point to get ready for the high at 0830ish with the hope of a feed of doggies. After anchoring up, the berley trail went out followed by our unweighted ganged pillies. Inevitably we attracted pickers as well as a school of 60cm Remora's, which always seem to be around there. So after a couple of hours of unhooking the suckers (litteraly ) Mel's Shimano 6500B goes off and we soon open the account with a nice 65cm doggy.

The next hour was pretty hectic as the little speedsters got on the chew with another 2 coming over the side, and plenty more lost at the boat and pulled hooks. Was already feeling pretty good when my Daiwa Magforce 57's (an oldy but a goody) ratchett started to go off slowly. My first thoughts were either big catty, shark, shovelnose or cuda', all of which I have caught in that area before. After I set the hooks however, I realised that I had upset it with 4 long runs that just made me start to have a little hope. Got some colour as it cruised to the surface about 20m away, "Bugger, its just a shark!". With somewhat deflated spirits I decided to give it some stick to get the fight over with so that I could get my bait back into the water. This proved a bit harder than I would have liked as it went deep and did circles under the boat ( and the outboard). Finally got his head up and.... "It's a @#$% Cobia!!", I'd never caught one before and needless to say my drag setting was a bit more carefull after realising it wasnt a noah. After a few anxious dives and attempts with the net, Mel got serious and hauled him in with a nice gaff shot..thanks Darl .
He ended up going 88cm and would ahave been around 8-9kg at a guess.

Back at the ramp by lunch time as the now familiar SE's started to lift.

Cobia was fantastic eating over a couple of nights (even the kids liked it) and the macks were given to a long time local workmate who gave me the GPS mark (thanks Cows ).
