Thread: Which way is up for GPS screen

Re: Which way is up for GPS screen

I like having it North up same as the chart.

Re: Which way is up for GPS screen

I guess my answer is both.

North up when on chart- i find this is good when fishing a mark as you can see which way your drift is going.

But I like going to marks using highway mode.

    Best of both worlds?

    I've got a Garmin GPS 298.

funny thing, I have done a lot of navigating (not just going to a waypoint) and I prefer to orient the chart to relate to the shore, then use the GPS in a "head up mode" but the proper way (I guess) is to have "north up" same as a compass and charts would be oriented.

I always use Nth up now. The reason being that in "track up", the display moves, chops changes, and swaps ends too much for my liking when going slow or drifting. I have a separate "highway" or navigation mode that i use while travelling from one mark to another.

I am sticking with north up.

I found it was like backing the trailer with mirrors at times which took a hell of a lot of practice but has become second nature now, I just had to persevere until it sunk in. Won't say how long it took but all good things come to he who waits, and waits, and waits

I have north up as me preferred chart orientation however when travelling towards a mark or waypoint I have configured my screen to have a heading degree and a bearing degree. I find it is lots easier to keep those two numbers the same and not have to keep referring to the chart to see how far i am off course due to wind or current or just cruising lazily in that rough direction.
I also find the bearing will pick up a change of direction a lot sooner than relying on driving the highway or following the line for a heading on the plotter mode.
