Smile My first serious attempt at SP

Well it was a little blowy as it is at the moment but unpreterbed I headed of down to the creek that runs by Murry Sporting Complex here in Townsville to try my hand at SPs. I was using a light shimano rig with 10lb braid and for the SP I used a 3inch minnow gulp in pumpkinseed on a 5gm 2/0 round jig head.

After a shaky start and a snag in the tree across the creek and a re rig I scored a small estuary cod, then after about 10 min and and 2 incoming phone calls I hit the jack pot, A nice Barra, all though not quite legal size it was my first Barra for the season and for quite some time I have to admit. So to say i was stoked was and understatement, I think I now have a soft spot for SPs and will definetly be trying them out again.

    Way to go Bubs!!

It was the start of a very long and challenging career I think, esp to burst ur cherry with a cod followed by a barra. If it were me i think i would be the one that was well and truly hooked!!

    Congrats man.

    Well done!

Did you see the strike? Gotta love it when a barra appears behind your lure with his gob wide open.

I've caught a couple of undersize barra on soft plastics myself this winter, about a mile downstream from where you were. The next trick for both of us is to catch a bigger one.

No I didn't see it but he hit reasonable hard for a little fella. I tried down stream around the power poles near Oonoomba but didn't get any thing there. I will probably be out tomorrow and have another try again. Might even try the breakwater wall as well tomorrow.

Your right re the bigger ones, hopfully as the weather warms up they might come out before closed season.

Went out yesterday and bagged another cod on the same SP so I am not doing to bad considering this is all land based till my hand gets better and I can operate the tiller on my boat again.

    Fantastic stuff...

Gotaa be happy with that barra, even if he is undersized, i'm thinking i may have to go back to SP's and give them a shot.

I haven't had too much action up here for a while on the hard bodies.

Nor did I but it was certainly worth the try. The second day I tried the same spot and was chased by the same Barra I think but didn't hook up I then moved down to the bridge at Onoomba and thats where I picked up the cod. There was a few fish cuting up the water up stream I had a go but to no avail, I think they were smallish sambos.

When I owned a flat bottom punt. One of the first outings I went under rooney's bridge and up to where the old dump and the DPI land is. just about ripped the motor off when I hit a rocky shoal that is in the middle. Don't know if you can cast to it but on a good tide it would have some fish sitting off it.

SP's have been producing "the goods" up in the weirs too fellas. Squidgy Slickrigs have been doing the damage- dropbear- in particular.
