    Rims on hubs

    Silly question, but should the inside of the rim fit snug on the hub, or leave a space between them of about 3mm all the way around ? and let the studs try to centre the wheel on the vehicle ?

    Have always thought it should be snug. But was told recently by the tyre mob I go to that it doesn't really matter anymore cause the studs are now designed to take the load. Any other thoughts?

    on the old HQ's etc it was snug, unless you had aftermarket wheels then it was loose.
    either way the studs take the braking/accelerating forces

    The "grip" of the rim to the hub should be 90% on the back side of the rim against the hub. The tension to hold it there should be via the bolts. The nuts for steel rims should be conical to centre the wheel to the hub. The inner of the hub has no bearing on safety for mounting IF the stud pattern matches properly.
    The bolts are providing the tension for the backing plate to grip the hub and should not be used for taking sideways thrust, bolts are not designed for shear.

    It is a similar thing to morse taper drills. The tang at the end of the morse taper should never take the load of the tortion, the taper part should take it completely.

    The hub takes no pressure at all off the load of the rims!!!! When i had my landcruiser, i really liked this set of alloys. But they where for patrol (which means 4 mm gap all around the hub) The tyre shop said no problems at all. The stud pattern are all the same. The hub means nothing!! I jumped my truck across creeks, hammered it so hard and it was fine. So no, makes no difference about the hub. I even had to put 3 2" welds on my axle/hub to stop it spitting my axle out, and the rim was big enough to fit over my welds on the hub/axle aswell.
