    Straightening a bent rod

I recently acquired an old 13'6 Butterworth Surf rod handed down from the old man.Great condition but one problem!.

The problem is that it has been up in the shed rafters for quite a while and has developed a slight bend to the right in the last foot and a half.

Does anybody have any ideas how to bend it back to straight again.

    Cheers

Hmm i dont know, maybe you could lay it down on a flat surface, on its side with a towel or something over the guides and then put some books on it?? I dont know only a guess. Could take a while though..

You might try heating with a hair dryer on a flat surface .
I once left a rod in the car on a hot day , and it ended up bent where it was touching the headliner,
so the epoxy in f/g rods must be heat affected, so if your careful you might be able to straighten it.

Yeah Rando's right , heat is your only chance to correct it, alot of rods are ruined by leaving them in a hot vehicle in a bent position... foxy

just use it as it is, it is a very common "feature" on old rods, it has been said that if you make up something to hold it straight and leave it that way for a fair while, (like weeks),it will "come good" but it may have been that way from new, I have seen a lot just like that!

OH and be VERY carefull with heat on an old rod, it will just de-laminate in a jiffy with too much heat.

Down in South Aus where the sun in summer tends to be very hot we discovered a way of taking the slight bend out of a glass rod.

Tie a loop of string to the tip and hook that onto the house gutter or somewhere high enough that the rod does not touch the ground. Then tie a kilo weight to the butt and let the sun do its thing. Needs to hang for a week or so.

                      Worked in 90% of cases.

I had a few old rods given to me many yrs ago that had spoent thier life leaning against a wall with a big alvey providing the force to cripple the buggers backwards badly.

I hung them from their tip with a small eyelet hook in the rafters of the shed for 6 months and they came straight.
