We were down there in the same area as well. but couldn't get away from the snot weed at all. Even the colour of the water is the same as the weed although there's been no rain . Cheers Well done Marty
Left Jacob's Well with JT just before dawn with the plan to find a few Flathead. Forecast was good and as we pulled up to our first spot, the sun started to peak over the horizon and lit up the sky in spectacular fashion (due to the smoky sky). Managed to snap the photo at just the right time - the colour was gone within 5 minutes.
With the high tide almost upon us, and a fairly cool morning we concentrated on throwing sp's amongst the shallow weed beds off the edge of one of the main channels. It wasn't too long before we managed a solid hookup and after a couple of runs landed a 64cm Flattie. Quick pic and let it swim free. I always find the Flatties go harder in shallow water. Worked this area for a while and managed a 42 and 52cm Flattie.
As the tide reached its peak we headed towards the bar entrance and tried a few other spots, but only managed one in the 40's. Watched one of the competitors in the ABT pull four Bream from four casts. Moved around this general area but failed to find any Flatties - perhaps they haven't moved to the bar entrances yet?
As the tide started to run out the 'snot' weed became thick and the fishing really shut down. It got to the stage where every cast would foul with clumps of weed in the first or second flick. We moved around to numerous spots to try and find clean water but it was to no avail.
Eventually we moved well away from the bar and as the tide slowed the weed seemed to settle and the fish started to bite again. Managed to catch a number of Flathead in the 40 and 50cm range over the next hour or so, before calling it a day.
Final tally was 10 Flathead and a small Tailor - kept one fish for dinner and let the rest go. Hopefully the weed clears over the next couple of weeks and the bigger fish move to the bar entrances.

wow that sunrise pic is awesome mate
Nice fishing mate , it has been tough conditions run out tide round the pin lately... the weed kills ya. Are u fishing the classic, ausfish member DC and i will be in my boat this year, really looking forward to it.
Havent fished it since 2004 i think it was.
Great photo marty, youve given me an idea for a wallpaper on my laptop. I must take a similar shot. I love the leccy at the bottom too.
10 fish is a good score mate, nothing wrong with that.
Ive been fishing once a week thru winter, but just not posting. I think I'll just post jacks from now on. The lizards in the paddock are around 50-60cm lately. Not much on the mid or lower reaches. I think I'll start to work the old haunts again, JEs dropped jack has inspired me. I reckon the water is warmer this year.
cheers
Andrew
JB - yes will be fishing the Classic again this year - 5th year straight. Wouldn't miss it. Will have to say hi at the briefing.
Andrew - plenty of salt in the rivers at the moment. The Flatties are definitely taking their time getting to the bars this year - won't be far away now! Neither is Jack season
Marty
Great pics. gee there is some talent on this sight and its just not fishing. Great stories and pics just keep coming Congrads mate
Well done. Have to love those magic sunrises. I took one very similar photo not long ago when I was fishing in the Bay.
Cheers,

good to see your still knocking a few, got to love it when the flatty turn on. nice pic of the rise, makes you think about how worthwile it is getting up early when you see stuff like that.
Was a great day on the water, and nice to catch a couple of decent flatties. Even if we caught no fish, that sunrise made it worthwhile getting out of bed at stupid o'clock - best part of the day.
I just hope that snot weed doesn't hang around for long, it definitely makes for frustrating fishing.
Here's a pic of the same sunrise taken seconds after Marty's, big difference in the colours between the different cameras.
Cheers
John
Gee ..is the sunrise like that every sunday morning ? I must check some time.
Great photos..one of the bonuses ( boni ?) of fishing which I love. Nature wins everytime. Except for hooked fish. I guess we both win with catch and release.
Well done!!

For those that didn't see my similar photo taken at wello some weeks ago here it is. Obviously this is the time of year to be up early for this sort of shot.
