    Re: mako on plastic

    Matt,

that is an urban myth. It pops up from time to time on here, the Marlin Bar, Fish n Waves, Fishnet, Sportsfish etc. etc. but there has never been any substaniated proof. It was also suppossed to have occcured off Kirra. Same thing, no proof ever bubbled to the top. It is ridiculous to think divers would waste their time in waters 45m+ deep over sand. The shallower they are the longer their dive time and the more reefy the country the more to look at. Why would they waste their time out on sand/gravel/sponge country. Best they could hope to see would be a couple of Spanner Crabs scurring past.

Like Ian, I also listened to that recent talk by Julian Pepperall and it is was very encouraging. Especially Blue Marlin. They often look bronzed up and lethargic at the boat yet by sat tagging they are proving to the one fish with the least mortatily. Living out on the shelf gives them a head start away from the sharks usually living near reef and only one from Vanuatua ended up as shark poo. There are a couple of good underwater videos of billfish release I have seen lately. They to are very encouraging. The Fishwrecked site from WA has one of a Sail that looks pretty tired boat side but once it sinks down a bit, gives a few slow flicks of the tail, finds its bearings and gets upright it really looks quite good. Must also be a Blue they film on an Ultimate Lady DVD that is much the same. Pretty poor boatside and you hope the best for it but down a bit under the surface it gains momentum and glides off out of camera range no problem at all.

As for Makos there is a spot on the Sunshine Coast that seems to hold them through winter. Not far out either and you would reasonably expect to tangle with one every second trip or so. They feed on all the good stuff like Sauries, Slimeys and Yakkas, not the dead and decaying stuff like your normal sharks so they should taste allright. That is why Reds are so good. They dine on all the crustaceans we all like to eat like Crays, Bugs, etc.

Well done on an unusual catch on plastics Bobby.

    Thanks for that smithy.
That was only word of mouth from that from what (i thought was) a reliable source.
Would you imagine that mako's would be prevalent around the north coast of nsw?
Good to hear that there is a high catch/release/survival rate as im going to be decking out my boat next year to try and get into marlin season of 09.
    Fingers crossed!
