    Haines 233 rebuild

    Hi folks,
I have just started to rebuild my dream boat, I bought the boat off this website a fair while ago and have since removed the cabin structure, the twin boat anchors (mercruisers) and basically stripped the hull bare. My plan is too completely refurbish the hull, new stringers floor transom etc. But this is where the intersting bit starts, I want to turn it into a centre console/cabin. The construction of the console will be aluminium and incorporate a hardtop. Yes it will be used for fishing out wide off Gladstone and Mackay, as I have only slept in my current ride a Haines 560F about 5 times in 10 years I am weighing up the option of a cabin. I like the look of the fisher console setup with the sink and stuff behind the seats. I guess what i am asking is what ideas you guys have about a build of boat this size and what features I should include. Budget about 30 grand for hull mods and electrics then sell the Haines for a motor. A new Yamaha 350!!! would be nice. Any one have any idea what they are going to cost.
    Cheers,
    Whitey

Geez mate, you've bitten off a big chunk of work there! Going to be a hell of a boat by the time you're finished though and I admire you for it. As far as ideas go, the Yanks seem to have a monopoly on big centre console boats, Boston Whaler, Grady White etc, I'd be haunting their websites for some ideas, even if you incorporate a goodie like the Fisher set-up.

There are others on the forum better qualified to advise than me, but I'd think hard about an alloy console, probably a lot easier to get a good finish from glass, which you're going to have to work with anyway to do the floor etc.

As far as the 350 goes, I recall someone on the forum quoting late $30's as the price (gulp!)

Good luck and keep the photos coming,

    Carl

Thanks brumby, im basically just chopping all the excess away before the fibreglasser takes over and I become his apprentice for the rest of the build. Basically he'll be cutting everything and ill be prepping it for him to install. The reason i was thinking aluminium was ease of installing grab rails, rocket launchers and keeping the weight down on the hardtop. I am a fitter and turner so working with metal is nothing new to me and have a few friends to help out. Also was thinking about installing a full width bolt on aluminium pod. What do you guys think about this or as im getting the transom and stringers redone, build it out of fibreglass. HMMM!! Late 30s for the 350, if i can just find someone stupid enough to pay that for the 560F.

I heard that the Yammy 350 was close to the $37k mark. I was recently quoted $32k for a 300 suzuki. You would have to ask yourself is the extra 50hp worth the extra 5k, and then there is difference between the 2year warranty on the yamy and 5 years on the suzuki.

    megafish,
i was down at the sydney boat show and was told 38k for the 350 but all yamy's now have a 4 year warrenty.
i was less then pleased after just purchasing a 115 6 months ago with a 2 year warrenty.

Yamy must have not up dated thier advertising as yet, last mag I have still advertising 2 year warranty. Don't get me wrong my last 2 outboards have been yamy 4 stokes (115 & 200) both were great, but am seriously considering a switch to a zuk 300 for my next one.

why bother with a 350 v8 for 40k when you can get a 200hp diesel for around that price. Youll save more in fuel and the motor will be far more reliable. You may not acheive the top speed of the ob but who travels at 40knots at sea anyway. maybe a steyr with bravo 2 leg on it. You'll save in fuel and have a boat that will troll for hours and have increased range. these new diesels are also coming down in weight. So seriously consider that as an option. As for centre console, why not a centre cab. At least you wont get as wet.

    my 2 cents

    Re: Haines 233 rebuild

Hi whitey81 i used to have a 233 formula with a full width pod with a 225 yamaha/4 stroke i used to get 72 k/ph out of ot full tilt i think it was power'd pretty right i would go full width extension in fibreglass that will make it 26feet long ,the formula's have a thick hull so i personally would use foam stringers they have a box type stringer arrangment anyway which is made out of 1/2 inch ply/glass,make the centre consol out of glass using melamine as a mould surface make it out side the boat and then just drop it in and tag it in.I would also make the hardtop out of glass/foam ,if you come down to brissy sometime i can sell you some 2" foam cheap. Have fun doing it and take your time ...jim

Young fisho, I know what your saying but I wont win any races with the diesel, totally agree with the reliability and fuel economy, ill be getting a 250 suzuki by the looks of things. Any photos of previous formula builds would be greatly appreciated especially regarding any pod modifications. I have since added a few more things to my wish list like dual anchor wells, fold up rear lounge. And done a bit of work on the weekend , the floor is out. Ill be itchy until next year.

whittley,if you are going to put a pod on have a look at the new full length pod that ######### use .i believe its the one to use.in regards to making your centre cab if i was doing it i would proably use duflex pannels from atl composites in labrador.basically they are balsa sandwich with glass and epoxy, easy to shape, very light ,very strong and you just fair and paint with 2 pac, easy to glass in as well, and id would look part of the boat when finished where if its done on ally it will look like a after thought.man thats a big project hope i turns out good.

Hey Whitey81, i sold my father inlaws formula to someone up your way awhile ago , but it sure didn`t look like that, it still had a floor and a hard top and stuff . You sure have gotten in to it .Good luck , looks like your going to do a nice job. I will keep an eye out for progress reports , cheers Strongy.

Re: Haines 233 rebuild give me some tips

    Gday strongy,
Yep mate same boat, Ive had it that long now I dont even know when I bought it. I had to mfinish renovating the house before I started it,talk about the wrong priorities. Has he still got the 773

Ausfishes I need some info on selfdraining decks and deck wash systems and any other must have additions that others have installed on their boats that make it stand out from others, mods etc. I wanna do the build properly take the time and do it right the first time, without any rework. I have 2 other boats so time is not an issue. Ill post some photos of the floor soon
