    Clearing Stuck Anchor

Last couple times out I have had the reef pick stuck. I have tied off to the front and reversed off till the tines straighten. Been easy both times. Just wondering if there are any inherent dangers in this approach.

I do carry a buoy but haven't needed to use it.

best off to drive up the anchor rope, but off to the side so you don't run over it, then just keep going untill it comes off or the tines straighten, or use the bouy system, which works quite well, or even if there is no current, just get completely above the anchor and "jiggle" the rope. sometimes the chain will just unhook it, if all this has failed, then you need to just perservere to get it off, but NEVER tie off to the stern or anywhere towards the rear.

If I'm not using a buoy I'll drive up to take in as much slack as possible and get vertically above the anchor then tie off securely and drive over the anchor, hopefully this way I'll be anble to use the shaft of the anchor as a lever to straighten the tines.
As Noel has said never ever tie off to the stern, and try to keep the loading as straight under the bow as possible.

I had a couple of anchor retrieval rings made some time ago for Aus fishers, and have a few left...........they work a treat. Any one won't one, PM me................................................ .............cheers Jimmy

I can vouch for capt's anchor retrieval ring, it lifts a #2 Sarca and has it floating under the buoy no probs. very happy.

    Re: Clearing Stuck Anchor

I use 2 Methods.....I usually drive straight up on the anchor and then keep travelling 50 to 100 meters past it ...and if that dont work then as you have done....tied it on to the bow and reversed but while reversing i do a full circle...this also works for me...BUT i must stress i never tie anything onto the stern unless there is no other option and then the rope is only wrapped around a few times...never locked off so the deckie can just let it go if i tell him to...

    Cheers Mick

I carry reef picks in a heavy gauge for anchoring overnight and in rougher weather and a pretty light gauge job which I generally use that straightens very easily which gets used the most.
BTW gunna I just find that with my runabout the retreival buoy means I can anchor and retreive by myself from the cockpit without having to clamber through a too small hatch or over the windscreen and of course its a lot easier to pull the anchor back along the top of the water than up from the bottom.

Thats a good point Scott. Mine sits under the dash and doesn't get used. Have to get off me bum sometime and try it.

It's A Good Idea To Use The Buoy As You Will Do Less Damage To The Habitat You Are Fishing. Been Diving A While And We See The Results Of Poor Anchoring Techniques All The Time. The Buoy Is Quick And Easy And It Saves Your Back. Plus The Missus Can Do It While You Drive The Boat!!
