Thread: Vote for your preferred 2 stroke oil

Re: Vote for your preferred 2 stroke oil

hhmm it would seem that most think that price is the deciding factor in Oil purchase, because the cheapest of them all (valvoline) has the biggest following, that might be an incentive for the Oil manufacturers to lower their prices!! (but I doubt it)

An etec may consume oil in the ratio of 200:1 at idle but not at normal cruising speeds. My 175 etec consuming fuel at 30litres/hour, is consuming .35 litres/hour oil. (Or about 85:1 if my maths is correct)

Hi , Used Castrol approx 30 years in 10 outboards OMC & Mercury ranging from 7.5hp to 200 hp, I was advised to keep to the same oil & price was right buying bulk.
The new rig has a 60hp E-TEC, now using XD IOO Cannot justify the price tag

My mechanic has told me "DON'T use Nautilus !"
Says he gets more motors where the pots are Jet Black and burnt that have been using Nautilus, than any other oil type. Says only to use TCW-3 .
( Johnson OMC 140, around 1992, but only done 200 hrs.)

Question Re: Vote for your preferred 2 stroke oil

    Now I am realy confused.

I run a 1982 150hp Mariner premix 2 stroke. Usually run fresh premium unleaded and Shell Nautilas. Had the boat for about 12 months now and very reliable although some times a bit difficult to start when dead cold at the ramp (Do these motors require the trim to be fully down to start? Any sort of tilt and it turns over for 50-60 seconds before firing.)

Very smoky at startup and tends to foul plugs (starts missing) when idling out of habour ie 10mins. I honestly thought this was normal for a 50:1 premix. As soon as she is on the plane no problems all the way to WOT 5500rpm and about 39knots.

If I use Quicksliver or Castrol oil, is this fouling and smokyness likely to change?

    Cheers

Sam until there is some heat in the engine you will get an incomplete burn, ever heard of people speaking about how much mess their engine makes in a bucket of water when flushing, they forget to relate that experience to the real world and a warm engine when actually traveling somewhere.
Anyway yes you may see some difference with a change of oil to those above although I cannot say with the merc brand oil. If you would like to see a big difference try the xd 100 but all 2 st will smoke at startup its a nice thing as it can mean the engine was probably well protected while sitting.

Tilt changes the float levels in the carbs therefore the fuel level so if you have found the best spot for you stick with it, just keep trying a slightly different procedure each time from the very start and sooner or late you will probably find a setting that just works the best at all times cold, took me near a year and 12 odd early morning cold starts to find mine and be fairly sure about it.

    cheers fnq

Hmmm I use the Nautilus, and me piston tops are as clean as I have ever seen on a used motor. Nautilus is also TCW-3 as specified. Mind you i'm not recomending anyone to use it. Just stating this has been Mechanic hasn't seen jet black and burn't pots from using the stuff for the last 6 years.

Re: Vote for your preferred 2 stroke oil

    Hi guy's
well I use Valvoline in my 89 115hp yammy have been informed by not only my mechanic's, but also by some people I know that have use Shell Nautilus and have had nothing, but trouble with there motors, from smoking to blown motors.
I have always used valvoline in all my outboards the motor before this was a rebuild 1980 85hp evinrude, an it never missed a beat, so I will stick to what I know for the safety factor, not worth putting some thing in the fuel that my blow the motor when your on the water.

    Cheers
    Steve
