    50 million for water lovers

    $50 million for water lovers.

A $50 million State Government boating infrastructure boost will support Queensland’s buoyant love affair with the water.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Paul Lucas, said a water focussed strategy over the next two years will deliver new and upgraded boat ramps, pontoons and the continuation of long-term dredging strategies.
“At work or at play, Queenslanders love the water,” Mr Lucas said.
“Our enthusiasm for the water runs so deep Queensland is sailing close to NSW for line honours as Australia’s boating capital.
“That’s why the Queensland Government is spending more than double on boating infrastructure and related services than the state’s boat owners pay in registration.
“In 2006-07 the Beattie Government spent $28.5 million on boating infrastructure an and marine services, but collected only $13.5 million in registration fees from Queensland boaties.”
Mr Lucas said in the last four years there had been a strong increase in the number of recreational boats registered in the Sunshine State.
“In 2003 the number of recreational boats registered was floating at around 175,000, but by May this year we’d hit the high water mark with 212,000 - that’s an increase of 21 percent.
“Queensland Transport is working closely with local governments to deliver new boating infrastructure projects around the state,” Mr Lucas said.
Several projects, totalling approximately $15 million will be funded by the two year program in Southeast Queensland.

Thanks Nugget, good to see an increase in returns for QLD boaties. I did take intersest in one of the quotes though.

In 2006-07 the Beattie Government spent $28.5 million on boating infrastructure an and marine services, but collected only $13.5 million in registration fees from Queensland boaties.

How much I wonder has been paid through GST from boating products/boating tourism etc that got horded away to other projects. I know GST is a federal thing but it's still too disproprtionate.

    Thanks again Chris

    Yeah,

At long bloody last but still no dredging or pontoon for Raby Bay which is in desperate need, still a bit pathetic I feel but a start I guess.

Re: 50 million for water lovers

$40 mil was set aside for boat ramp upgrades etc at ther last State election - lifestyle policy. Ain't seen nuthin' yet!

I reckon a pontoon down the centre of the ramp at Jacobs well would create chaos - even more than there is now. I can just imagine the mess

Some good stuff on that list if it comes to fruition. Lets hope it does.

The statement about spending more than is raised through rego is a bit of cop out and spin doctoring by the state I think.

We pay much more than just rego to the various governments in the way of taxes related to fishing. Don't forget that though the GST is a Federal Tax much of it is allocated back to the States for spending. (NB I'm not a fan of either the Qld or the Federal Govts presently!)

Am I being sceptical here or was the 50 mil put up so we wouldn't be too upset about losing some fishing grounds in the proposed closures ?

Whats the point, with the Moreton Bay fishing closures there wont be a great demand for boat ramps.
The current government has lost the plot.

Beattie is at it through his little brainless pupet. For crying out loud, the man is a systematic liar, and anyone dare to question him is doing so against the interest of Queensland.
He has a very crafty way of replacing his name "Beattie" with "Queensland"
and has anyone also notice he hold media releases and he asks himself questions and then follows on with answering his own questions?
Last time I saw this it was in a dictatorship style govt.
Sorry about bleeting on, but I'm tired of "The Australian Outdoor Lifstyle" getting reammed by a minority group.
