If the story proves to be correct, you didn't hear if they were retrieving the anchor from the stern did you?

I understand this is early days but if that was the situation, the few people on the site who use the same method do need to have the risks highlighted.

Not sure but it sounds like it doesn't it? The sea was uncomfortable that night but as flat as a tack by 9am next day. I had the opposite problem that night- my anchor rope cut through on the reef somehow!

we were at wide cal all saturday with the vhf on 73 we heard coastguard mooloolaba talking to keep it reel a few times but nothing about a boat sinking the weather wasnt to bad blowing probally a 15 knot nw.

Was the conversation part of a 'mayday' call? If not would it not be covered under the 'Code of Secrecy' if broadcasted on VHF 73? May be this is why no one is answering your question? A licenced operator on VHF radio would be aware of this code. May be the question should be reasked differently?

there was definitely no mayday call covering this event to the best of my knowledge. I reckon it would be pretty obvious if it was covered by a mayday call.

Private Plate boat. Retrieving anchor with buoy. Hooked onto aft bollard. hooked up, rolled, still under power just drove herself under.
2 in the water, no PFD, no EPIRB, a long way from nowhere.
Anyone else getting a chill up thier back ?
Just by fluke a charter came along, picked them up, transferred to a Noosa Commercial fisher who bought them home.
BTW Uninsured.

This apparent reason for sinking , was on of my guesses when the news first broke, if true and we get a full and accurate report it should be linked to every anchor retrieval threat that ever comes up again.

I still strugle with the fact that when advising people against retrieving an anchor this way , someone will jump on a say " It's fine been retrieving from the stern for years"

Ummm, are we missing something here. Shouldn't the boat have basic floatation. So the bow should float. íf it's plate they are usually have a air tight floor.

How could the boat sink to the bottom????

I would imagine if it aint stuffed with foam from top to bottom then any boat could go to the bottom. Maybe they had the front hatch open too.

Sounds like the old Swiss Cheese model of how major disasters happen.
Each hole in your block of swiss cheese is an error and when you have enough of them and they all line up then you get a disaster.

stupid question time

Can someone explain the buoy method of retreiving an anchor? I've seen boats with a buoy on the anchor rope but never knew how it works.

Its not a stupid question. It would be worth a search of this forum for pics and details as there has been a number of treads devoted to it.

Essentially use use the buoy to lift the anchor instead of you hauling it in.
I use a solid 100mm SS ring which is permanently attached to the anchor line a snap hook on 1M of heavy rope to a 300mm foam ball. Throw the lot over hte bow.
When you want to lift the anchor you motor away, forward at 45 degrees and the chain and anchor falls through the ring until the float gets to the anchor. Be careful not to run over the anchor as it comes up.
It doesn't always work it snagged.
Remember only pull from the bow.

Smart move youngfisho things go very bad very quick using the stern method in retreiving anchors

It was 'Keep it reel'.....who rescued them and brought them back into Noosa.
I heard the same story that they tied the anchor rope to the stern.
