boat sunk on Barwons Sat 11th

I was fishing off Caloundra on Saturday morning and about 10 am-ish I heard over the radio that some fella had picked up two blokes out on the Barwons and their boat was sinking. The Coastguard and water police were on their way out there and about half an hour later, got another call to say the boat had now gone to the bottom so there was no point going out there (to tow it back in).

I heard that there was a 20 knot N-NW wind out on the Barwons, while at Caloundra, it was 5-10 knots W-NW until about 11 am.

Anyone have any more info on the boat sinking? Hope it wasn't an ausfisher?

What time on Saturday we were out at Tempest never heard a thing ? Would be interesting to hear more , can certainly vouch for the wind being 15nts or more in the morning but appeared to close down after 12.

everything I heard was on VHF ch 73 with CG Mooloolaba and the other vessel (don't remember the call sign) having the 'conversation'

Didn't heard a thing, we were out at southern bank and then caloundra wide, pretty average weather to say the least.

Yeah, a boat definalty sunk with another private vessel bringing the people back in. I was on duty at Caloundra at the time. But only heard it on the radios. Didnt talk to anyone from Mooloolaba so dont know the full story.

Just heard on the grapevine (can't verify), that it was a big plate boat that swamped whilst retrieving a snagged anchor. Apparently flipped over and later sank under tow.

If the story proves to be correct, you didn't hear if they were retrieving the anchor from the stern did you?

I understand this is early days but if that was the situation, the few people on the site who use the same method do need to have the risks highlighted.

ANYBODY who ties off to the stern to get their anchor up is a disaster waiting to happen, but it has not been said or proven that it is what happened in this case.
