I fished at Manly this morning. I tried one spot for about 45 minutes. Water was crystal clear and there was no bites so I decided to move.
First cast in the new spot resulted in a 25cm squire so I decided to stay for a bit longer and see how I went.
I was using live bloodworms and SP's. I got a couple of really good hits on the SP but did not hook up.
I was walking the bank flicking SPs when I heard the drag on the baited rod going and looked up to see line disappearing and the rod doubled over. I quickly ran to the bait rod and could tell it was a good fish. I was thinking big bream but to my surpirse it was a squire of about 39cm. Although I was tempted to keep the fish I decided to let it go.
I kept fishing for another couple of hours for another 25cm squire and 4 undersize bream. All fish were on bait although I got 4 or 5 good hits on the SP that didn't hook up.
I don't know if my fishing is getting better or I am just getting luckier!.
Sounds like a good spot mate....Keep belting out those plastics....I reckon there would be some bigger snapper there too if the smaller ones are there.
TheClick - I have spent the last few years exploring this area for landbased options. Try around the boat harbour, rock walls etc. You can also try the Lota creek mouth at low tide.
Chief - The spot I got the squire was very accessable, no tight entrances??
A lot of people are happy to get a legal squire into the boat but land based? Top effort. You'd have to be pretty pleased with yourself. Just let me know when you hook up to an 80+ cm version. I'd pay money to see you tussle with it and land it. Well done mate.
I let the fish go as I was intending only to fish for fun and did not have anything appropriate with me to keep the fish in. I would have liked to have kept it. Hopefully he and his mates will be around in the same spot when I try again. I'll take more than worms for bait next time.
