Left Scarbourough in "Fishinrocks" boat 5am this morning. The plan was to hit some of the shallow reefs around the cape in pursuit of some snaps. Rounded combyuro point and it was a washing machine. Decided to give western rocks a go, to no avail. The decision was made to head back to Curtin where I got a few snaps last week. After about 1/2hr or so of nothing but small squire my light plastics outfit got slammed, and I mean slammed. The hooked fish started off slow but quickly built up steam to the point where we had to give chase. I was calling it for a big nobby. How wrong was I. About 20 minutes later and after a few tense moments when I thought for sure I was going to loose it to a wreck we saw colour. Still along way down but it looked snapperish. Second time we got colour it was called for a kingie. But then we got a good look a a bloody big golden trevally. After the initial disappointment of it not being a snapper, it started to sink in how big the fish was. It pulled the scales down at 12.68kg and went 110cm long. Not a bad result for 10lb line with a 12lb leader on a 2500 stradic, 1/4 3/0 jig head a 4" swiming mullet gulp. Managed a nice 50cm cod on the way home but that was it. It is still bloody quiet out there.
