The river certainly seems to be a better option than mud at the moment with plenty of good squire around.
Hit the water at 5.45 to a glass out despite seabreeze predicting 15 knots. On board today was Geno, the newest member of our flathead classic team. The plan was to fish the sunrise for squire and then do some technique practice on flathead up boggy creek.
The water was clear for the river but not really clear like it is at mud and there were plenty of fish showing on the sounder although they were spread out. After a few casts for no result I cast out in front of the boat and got hit on the drop. Line started peeling off the reel but using the electric we stayed out of trouble and landed a nice fish at 53cm. Next it was Geno's turn and he had a great tussle with a 58cm fish on 6lb braid - he did well because it kept wanting to head towards the pilons. We decided to release this fish, which must have been good karma as Geno was back on quickly with another 53cm squire.
We moved to another show on the sounder and Geno is on again (using 5 inch jerk shads in nuclear chicken). This fish took off and stripped line off too quickly and made it home to the pilons - smoked!
We added one more 54cm squire to the tally before the sun hit the water and the bite stopped.
As the tide bottomed out we headed up boggy creek casting plastics and catching a few smallish flathead best going 52cm.
All in all a fantastic morning and a great first fish with Geno. And I don't mind if he continues to outfish the skipper as long as he can repeat this in the classic.
Cheers,
Ollie
