Thread: Roller Issues

    Re: Roller Issues

Thanks heaps again for all the advice fellas. I emailed the company where I purchased the trailer and they have offered me replacement rollers fully installed and set up to suit the tinny at no charge. It is comforting to know that they will provide some backup service and restore my faith in companies again. I can come up with more than one example of where companies will ignore you once they have your money.

    Cheers,

    Re: Roller Issues

Thanks David. All I said in my email is that I have only had the trailer 3 months and already the rollers have chewed themselves out. I went on to say that I had posted this thread on Ausfish to seek advice being an inexperienced boating person that I am and that the general consensus was that I had been sold a trailer with the wrong type of rollers and that I was not happy about that. The trailer is going to get new rollers and set up properly in their workshop on Monday.

    Re: Roller Issues

Hope they can solve your roller problem. Personally i think it is your trailer set up. Not enough centre rollers or should I say not in the correct position. Check out dnej trailer. I had a similar problem with the centre roller second from the rear chewing out. The Quintrex keel is undercut 400mm from the rear of the boat so all the boat load is placed on the second rear centre roller. 30hp Honda, fuel tank and hull all on one roller weight over 100kg. Alloy boats should have the weight supported by centre rollers and the skids should stop the boat rocking side to side and not be bearing any true weight. Between the rear most roller and second rear roller I fitted a set of double centre rollers by U-bolting an extra cross member to the chassis. The weight is now shared over three rollers so each is carrying a third of the boats weight. I have now converted three other boat trailers that had mine and your problem. This is my opinion only. Trailers are only built to a price and that what you and I got. Most dealers count on people only using the boat 10 times a year and living 5 k's from the boat ramp and a cheap trailer will do. I don't know where Mt. Warren Park is but if you are travelling a distance to go fishing then the problems show up.

That makes sense really. Mt.Warren Park is basically the Beenleigh area and I travel about 30mins to get to Manly where I usually launch from. Hey if you have any pictures of your setup can you please post them up? I'd like to see it if possible.

    Thanks,

I will beg, borrow or steal a camera by the end of the weekend and get a photo and then learn how to post it

    Re: Roller Issues

Andrew what Honda guy says is so very true.
A boat your size may be small but 3 rollers???
What he's saying is to bolt a member equidistant between the cross member that's over the axle and the cross member at the back so it runs perpendicular to the transom of the boat (or parallel to the existing cross members) and put another roller or two on the bolted in cross member.
That way there is definitely more support.
Are they going to still have service backup if/when the new rollers chew out??
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good

WHile the boat is off the trailer on Monday I will ask them about it. Maybe if they have some left over pieces of gal I can take them with me and perhaps another day at finga's place is on the cards?

    Re: Roller Issues

I hope the boat is going to be on when they set it up. Otherwise how do they set t up to suit the boat??
Mate, I'd be asking about the amount of overhang the boat has as well.
Most of the strength is at the transom not 1/2 way up the boat.
I just had a gander at the two trailers on my little boats and they only have 3 rollers up the guts but both have support at the transom...don't know if this makes a difference.

Yes the boat is going to be on the trailer. The way I have the boat sitting on there now is very little over-hang so most if not all the support is on the transom. I might ask them about putting more rollers in as well. The magic words will be "I am willing to pay!"

To the right is the front or bow and the left is the stern or back of the boat. To have a double roller is only about $10 more or the price of packet of SP's. I prefer over spec. than cut corners for such a small price. Does anyone know why the keels are cut back so much as it makes it neccesary to do this modification to support the transom weight. Hope this to explains my theory.

    Here is a thousands words.

    Re: Roller Issues

Ive been told that with external keels, having the keel going all the way to the transom generates a lot of turbulence resulting in significant loss of propeller performance.

How did you get on with your trailer on Monday Poodroo? Did the photo help at all? hard to get a decent shot.

    Re: Roller Issues

Got the boat over to them and they were more than happy to change the rollers over. Was going to be a pick up same day sort of thing but my last run in my boat developed a prop issue.. chewed out the rubber bush so I left the tinny with them to get it rebushed. Have seen the new blue poly rollers so it is all set up ready to go... just waiting for the prop to come back now.

    Cheers,

    Poodroo
