    Talking Ugly Muds Wanted

Hi guys, just looking into some serious offroad tyres. I can fit a maximum of 265/75/R16 on my 'Lux with 16x7 sunrasia rims.

I have a set of Pirelli scorpions on now for street/site use because the nightwatchman said the coopers were too scary in the wet. I said OK, but didn't tell her I would then need a dedicated set of offroad wheels/tyres.

I don't really know what brands to go with. You've got your major brand muddies like Bridgestone, BFG and Goodyear but I want something with lugs on the side walls for added traction in washouts and mud. I have been warned away from Mongrel tyres as they are monoforms so possibly not as strong as others. There are some swamper tyres in the correct sizes but I don't know what they are like.
Mickey Thompson only makes the MTZ in a small enough size.
Simex make the MP Trekker in a size to fit but again I don't know that much about them.

Pretty much the only restriction I am imposing myself is they must be DOT approved for driving on the road. This is in case of an accident driving to/from tracks/parks. Any help would be appreciated.

mate i got the cooper stt, now while there not the ugliest mudders they performed very well for me. I have throwen a fair bit of tough stuff there way band haven't managed to tear a lug of, andi'm yet to stake one as well. They perform well in the muds and have some side wall lugs , not as much as a simex though. They also go quite well on the road.

A Maxxis Bighorn will be available and about the uglies of the legal tyres you'll get. Similar in pattern to an MTZ, and Wrangler MTR but a bit more open in their block spacing. They have reasonable sidewall lugs.

The problem you'll find is that anything in a Radial (road legal) won't have as bigger sidewalls as a Bias Ply tyre.

Your best options will be the MTZ, Maxxis Bighorn, and Wrangler MTR.

Bastard has seen my Maxxis go in some rocky stuff and the survived.

Thanks for the info guys. It is looking like the MTZ, Maxxis Bighorn, and Wrangler MTR are to be looked at carefully. Goodyear have a sale on atm, buy 3 MTR's and get the 4th for $19.00. Looks good but I don't know if they are aggressive enough.

Saw a set of Federal Mudders for $200 each and they looked pretty ugly. Will look into the others again.

    Re: Ugly Muds Wanted

Problem with the Radial Calws is they come in 31" and jump to 33". Unless I can get an offset that will allow 33" tyres they are a no go.

    what about split rims and 7.5, 8 or 8.5 r 16's?

Plenty of meat tyres there and they'll match your offset?

    Re: Ugly Muds Wanted

Have found out that 90-95 series Prado have 16x7" 15P offset. Maxxis Bighorns look like the go, I can get them in a 265/75/16 which gives 807mm/31.8" diameter. Or if I go a 17" rim I can get 275/70/17 with 818mm/32.2" diameter.

The Bighotns are the most aggressive tread I can get that will fit and still be approved for road use. Notice I didn't say the 'legal' word.

    Re: Ugly Muds Wanted

    Brett,

Pretty sure there were two different offsets for the prado in those years - one was gxl and up, one was rv, world cup etc.
Make sure you get the right one - good luck.

The 'second hand tyre king' at slacks creek carries genuine rims if you're chasing.

    Re: Ugly Muds Wanted

Yeah C.J. there wer 3 different offsets throughout that period. I'll be measuring the offset before any money is handed over. Tried that guy and he sold his last two on Friday. If I can't find them anywhere else I will try him again next week.

Just a word on the Bighorns, I have 2 mates that bought them, one set went on a hilux and they seem to be faring quite well, the other set went onto a Patrol GU Wagon and they are pretty stuffed and noisy after about 40,000 Kms. From what I gather, they do perform pretty good both in the mud and hillclimbs though. Probably not recommended for extended road use.
