    Darkside of the Weir

Myself and BGH05 fished the Ross River lastnight as a last chance session before we both go back to work for a week or so.
For the last few days here in Townsville the days have been warm and the nights have been mild compared to the cool weather we've expierienced recently. That, coupled with a full moon, was an opportunity too good to pass, so off we went to soak some livies.
However, as I left the house full of hope my better half quips in- "It's meant to be 11 degrees here tonight". A little deflated I peer at the cloudless night and wonder how it might affect our chances.
We met at the weir and had our first livies in by about 9.00pm. After a short time Callan's bait got nailed with a strong hit but unfortunately got spat back out. It was going to be a good night.
Then came my turn. The balloon suddenly disappeared and the familiar zzzzzzzzz of my Abu signalled Barra. A breif struggle ensued and the fish was landed. NO TAPEMEASURE! I measured the fish against my rod for a rough length (to be measured later back home), took a happy snap and got her back in the water to live another day. It was 9.30pm.
It was after this that we could feel the night really cool off. I don't think it got as low as 11degrees but it did get cold! We were left there expectantly watching each others balloon sitting atop what appeared to be a mirror, harrassed occassionly by the odd eel.
Our patience wearing thin, Callan decided one last cast into a particular spot which- historically speaking- always holds a fish. Bait went 'plop', reel went zzzz, followed by a second of silence (and Callan's bait left unmolested AGAIN) and the seconds' silence was broken by a 'thwack'...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. My Abu was in action again! She gave a couple of aerial displays before submitting and once again was measured, photographed and released in a timely manner.
Both of us agreed that it could not have been the same fish that first hit Callan's bait then took mine. Our baits were too far apart and the time was only a fraction of a second between hits. Almost a double hook-up!! The time was 11.50pm.
That was it from that time on- except for a massive eel that took my bait and didn't want to give up so was cut loose.
The first fish went approx. 78cm, the second approx. 84cm. Not the night we'd hoped for but still enjoyable- for me anways- sorry Cal.
