    Ballina Jackets

    Hi all,

After a fair bit of drama, was good to get the old girl back in the chase,

only to find the damn jackets are back...........

Ballina RSL FC held our monthly deep-sea outing today, the forcast (bless it) predicted a reasonable day, what we were greeted by was a bit different, a good bar, but that was about it.

I dont think it really matters where you go at the moment, you are guaranteed a good feed of jackets, bad luck if you wanted something else.

SO...if anyone is looking for a good feed.........PLEASE COME TO BALLINA & help thin our jackets.

Ps, will post a pic of Charlie with a couple of jackets, about 1.8kg each

Hehehehe, cant say I blame you Heath,

I would be very interested as to how far the plague reaches, so if anyone who is getting them north of Ballina could let me know, I'd appreciate it.

    BLOODY Leatherjackets all right!!

pulled a couple of 10 kilo bar cod 3/4 of the way up for it only to be bitten of by a bloody leatherjacket is very fustrating.

    Re: Ballina Jackets

well if it of any help, they are down South as far as the Illawarra and further down, but not too sure how far, the trouble we have is that they are not only very thick, but also not too big, so they are pretty useless for anything.

    Cheers Noelm,
you guys down south must be really sick of them, you get them for way longer than we do.

Isn't it mind-boggling how many there must be, off Ballina we can catch them from inside the 32s all the way to the shelf (at least 15 miles). No need to drop all the way to the bottom even, they start at about 40 feet under the boat & go all the way down.
Agreed, this years crop seems to have way more smaller ones than previous years, the 2 in the photo were the biggest on the day where other years they were the average.

I'll be glad to see them go again.

we are getting them from about 5 metres deep to near the shelf, if you burley for a minute or so in less than 15 metres they are in droves right at the boat, you can scoop them up if you want to, they can bite through a hook shank like it is nothing, and pick your bait off on the way down, you don't even know!

Looks like your got a male and a female there you can tell by their colouration, the spanner crabbers upat brunswick have to give crabbing away for a couple of months when their around they eat all the pots, same with the trawler guys they go through hell they chew massive amounts of holes in the nets.
